background image Setting up your Libraries and Events When using the Computers in the CTC and for our own personal computers when you start and use FCPX. DON’T LET FCPX SET THESE UP FOR YOU TO YOUR HOME DIRECTORIES PERIOD. This is a default look.  If you let FCPX 10.3.X update your old Libraries automatically you will  not be able to use an older version of FCPX. For those who do have older Libraries you should copy them first then open them. Otherwise lets move on.
background image Libraries – Hold your Events and Projects. They can also contain media files if you wish to         share you media across different Events and Projects in the Library. Events-       Hold your Projects and media files, which can be use for a certain project only. Projects-    Hold the Timeline you are editing. Smart Collections- Folder that will contain all your Smart Collections for this Library.  This is the Final Cut Pro X 10.3.x Interface when you launch FCPX. So with this default set up (launch) by FCPX where are the Libraries located?
background image FCPX by default wants to create Libraries to your Home Directory Movies Folder See my home directory, ccrowe2>Movies>Untitled Library. This is what you see above in FCPX.
Now this is on my home Mac. In the CTC this would be your Home Directory located on the CTC
Server. This is not where we want the Library to be and the staff will DELETE it.  Why? What is in the Library? All your audio and video media files for your projects and the size
of this will cause the CTC Server to crash as it is not set up for large video file storage, editing,
and playback. If you have your own computer and do not keep these out of the Movies Folder it will cause
your computer hard drive to fill up quickly and you will also slow down the performance and
could possibly have your Hard Drive crash and this will stop your computer completely. YOU MUST NOT LET THE LIBRARIES BE SET TO THE CTC (YOUR HOME DIRECTORY) IT IS ADVISED IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN COMPUTER NOT TO LET THE LIBRARIES SAVE ON OUR INTERNAL HARD DRIVE.
background image This is what you will need to do for this course in the CTC and I would also suggest you do this
on our own personal computers too. All FCPX work needs to be on external hard drives. It is
best practice to keep all project work (libraries) in separate folders and not just “saved to your
external”. Don’t forget that your External Drives need to be Mac formatted.
Here are two ways to set up your Libraries on your Hard Drives in project folders. One way I like is to create a folder on my External Hard Drive for my edit sessions. Of course I have quite a bit of folders but you can see I have set up: crowe T1TB>My Work (or any name for your project or edit) Using the OS file system I create a work folder on my Hard Drive BEFORE I open FCPX. I would suggest you keep your FCPX work in one place, like a folder. But anyway you want try  be organized. The next way you may create a work folder is from inside FCPX while you create your Library
and Event for your work.
Once you open FCPX you will need to close the Untitled Library first. You cannot rename the Untitled Library as this is always attached to the Home Directory on the computer used.  It must be closed and then create a Library for your projects or edit sessions.  First you need to close the Untitled Library, you cannot delete it from FCPX. Here I am using the  Finder to create my folder
for my FCPX work.
Click on the gear icon  then New Folder. A Untitled Folder will be
created on your hard
drive where you wanted. Click on Untitled and
rename it.
