background image Weather notes week #1 What is science Prediction are based on facts Facts are collected through observation and measurement Measurements always have error Hypothesis­Question in statement­ made,tested, and debated Prediction made on hypothesis to be considered Predictions to be verified through hypothesis Theory evolves from hypothesis Scientific law happens if a theory can always be replicated 1 collect, 2 develop hypothesis, 3 develo observations, 4 accept or reject  or modify hypothesis  What is Meteorology/Climatology  Weather is a snapshot with lots spots Climate deals with ocean, land, Biology, people Climate normal ­ a period of an average 30 years ASOS Stations are used to measure weather patterns in a certain area Check weather sheet for an understanding on how to read weather station information Vocabulary Information: ISO Temperature: ISO therm Pressure: ISO BAr Precipitation: ISO tach Humidity: ISO Hume Wind: ISO Tach Front: A boundary between air masses cP: Continental Polar, cold and dry weather front mP: Maritime polar, cool to cold temp and moist precipitation mT: Maritime Tropical, hot and very moist cT: Continental Tropical, hot and dry little precipitation Sources of weather form either over land or sea High or low altitudes Flat topography Fronts Separate air masses of different  densities All fronts slope over cold dense air Warm air is less dense than  cold air and moist air is  lighter and dry air Cold fronts cause thunderstorms because they move fast and collide with warm  fronts
