Name: Obot, Willis  Course: BIO 264: 11 (Online). Anatomy & Physiology  Semester: Fall 2017  Course instructor: Sister Kim Greer  Module 05: Biological Membranes  One main primary functions of the membrane is to separate the intracellular 
environment from its extracellular environment. 
  Phospholipids have two regions containing the hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail. 
  The lipid binary is important as it represents the function of the cell membrane 
  CO₂ and O₂ can move freely across the phospholipid membrane because they don’t have 
charges.    In cell recognition, every cell in the body has a unique glycoprotein-glycolipid arrangement that  allows you to determine self from non-self. It is more like a screening; such as can happen in 
blood transfusion. 
  The cell and the proteins have the ability to communicate; example is in a “Receptor Protein”  which allows chemical signal to get into the system, and bind with proteins in the cell, allowing it 
to move some of the necessary substances through it. 
  Cholesterol is very important in the overall structure of a membrane because it keeps the fluid  in order to be able to carry out their functions.    GPCR means G-Protein Coupled Receptor; for conformational change (a change in shape).   
Facilitated transport 
o  Passive diffusion: the movement of solutes from an area of higher concentration to an area of  lower concentration. It comes with two types; Passive simple diffusion and Passive Facilitated 
diffusion (requires Channel protein or Transport protein
o  Channel proteins – Only specific to certain types of ions ( nonpolar molecules o  Transport proteins – specific to large  polar molecules  (glucose or amino acids)    The main importance of a passive diffusion is to establish equilibrium of certain substances in the  cell.  Proteins that help move substances across membranes have three important characteristics    Active transport: a type of facilitated transport that uses ATP as an energy source, and  substances can move with or against their concentrated gradients.    Specificity: only specific substances. 
   Competition: two or more substances of the same form can compete for transport. 
  Saturation: deals with the rate at which molecules can move across the membrane
