  • Energy is conserved.

→ Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred and transformed.

→ Enthalpy (H) is the total potential energy of a molecule, and its effect on the surrounding pressure and volume

→ △H is the difference in heat content of reactants and products measured in joules or calories.

→ An exothermic reaction is one that releases heat energy

i.e  △H < O.

An endothermic reaction is one that takes up energy

i.e △H > O.

→ For exothermic, products have less potential energy than reactants.

For  endothermic, products have higher potential energy than reactants.

→ Entropy (S) refers to when the products of a chemical reaction become less ordered than the reactant molecules

→ Entropy increases if no work is put into the system.

→ Second Law of Thermodynamics

  • Total entropy (amount of disorder) always increases in isolated systems.

→ The “lost” energy is dissipated to the universe and is commonly referred to as entropy

→ Work is generally required to produce order out of disorder, so energy must be used to produce a highly ordered state.

→ Gibbs Free Energy Change (△G) determines whether a reaction will happen on its own spontaneously (no added energy) or nonspontaneously (requires added energy.)

△G = △H - T△S

→ There are two types of reactions :

  1. Exergonic i.e △G < O ; a spontaneous reaction, no energy input required for it to occur.

  1. Endergonic i.e △G > O ; a nonspontaneous reaction that requires energy input to order.

  1. Equilibrium i.e △G = O.

→ ATP takes the general form :

→ The electrons in ATP have high potential energy because the four negative charges in its three phosphate groups repel each other.

→ Hydrolysis of the bond b / n in the two outermost phosphate groups results in the formation of ADP and H2PO4 in a highly exergonic reaction.

→ This process is exergonic because the entropy of the product molecules is much higher than that of the reactants.

→ All about ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

→ It is the cellular currency for energy.

→ Provides the fuel for most cellular activities.

→ Has high potential energy

→ Allows cells to do work
