background image Question Substitution ● How do people easily generate answers to difficult problems? ● Target question: Assessment you intend to produce ● Heuristic question: Simpler question you answer instead of the target. ● Examples ○ 3D heuristic ○ Mood heuristic ○ Affect heuristic Judgment heuristics in voting ● Who should I vote for? ● Test faces for competence. ● 70% of races: Higher competence=win. Mental Shotgun ● Intention of system 2 to answer a particular question or evaluate a particular attribute of  the situation automatically triggers other computations including basic assessments. ● But we often compute more than we need. ● Kahneman calls these the mental shotgun. Excess computation ● Intention to answer one question can evoke another. ● Some secondary questions can interfere with accurately or efficiently answer the initial,  target question. Intensity matching ● Julie read fluently when she was four years old ● What level of income matches Julie’s reading achievement? ● Which crime is as severe as Julie was precocious? ● Which graduating GPA in an Ivy League college matches Julie’s reading? ● Note: When we use this to answer the last question (as we are inclined to do), our  predictions are nonregressive. Examples ● Target: How well will Clinton fare in the primary?
