background image HIST 1320 Third Exam Review Fall 2017 Potential IDs: Camp David Accords
Signed in 1978 during Jimmy Carter’s presidency. The Accords were signed between the
leader of Egypt and Israel as an agreement to seek peace. The importance of this is that
it is the first time Israeli neighbors recognized the legitimacy of the nation of Israel. The
Camp David Accords also moved Egypt away from being an adversary of America.
Immigration Act of 1965
Occurred during LBJ’s presidency. The act changed quotas and limits that were set on
certain nations, allowing a more free flow of immigration back into the nation. The old
quota system highly favored ethnicities that were already present in America, and this
was significant because it was an acceptance of the idea that America was a nation
made up of all sorts of ethnicities.
Andrew Young
African American civil rights leader. Was named the leader of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference in 1964. Worked with Martin Luther King Jr.
Robin Morgan
Was a contributing author of Sisterhood is Powerful in the 60’s. Was a feminist during the
second wave movement and was a longtime contributing editor in Ms. Magazine.
Pentagon Papers
Federal reports that were leaked to and published by the New York Times and exposed
the secrecy and scandals of the Nixon Administration throughout the Vietnam War and
other instances.
Jerry Falwell
Part of the Religious Right, founded Moral Majority of 1979. Jerry Falwell was part of the
New Right movement that seeks to find realignment through principle. Falwell was
originally a pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, which was one of the central
churches during the rise of institutional evangelicalism during the 70’s.
Détente
The idea that Nixon was pulling away from the Cold War. Nixon did not stay in line with
the Truman doctrine, since he started speaking to China again. This is because Nixon and
his administration were “realists” and recognized that communist or not, China would be
playing a major role in the world economy. These actions led to China and Russia vying
for the United States’ favor.
PATCO Strike
PATCO was a union of air traffic controllers. They illegally held a strike protesting working
conditions. Reagan fired all 11,000 members and replaced them with the military. The
significance of this was that it sent a message that the government would no longer be a
neutral arbiter between businesses.

Great Society
Lyndon Baines Johnson’s social program, which was meant to out-do the New Deal. This
program expanded the federal government to a greater size than it had ever been
before.  Its major goals were to end poverty and push for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Iranian Hostage Crisis
After the ousted Shah of Iran is diagnosed with cancer and gets medical treatment in
America, Iranians are outraged that he is being helped and storm the American
Embassy, taking hostages.Occurred under the Carter Administration. Iranians took
Americans hostage for 444 days. This led to Americans viewing the Carter administration
as being weak and inept.
“Dictatorship and Double Standards”
Essay written in 1979 by Jean Kirkpatrick. The essay said that yes the U.S. stands for
human rights but that there was a double standard because the country treated all
dictatorships like the enemy. Kirkpatrick noted that dictatorships were not the same as
communism and therefore should not be treated as such.

invade Cuba. Resulted in Cuba becoming closer with the Soviet Union and the Cuban
Missile Crisis.
Howard Jarvis
Championed Proposition 13 in California. His organization around relieving taxation in
California switched a switch in the nation that led to the tax revolts of the late 1970s.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

Vietnam conflict.

1962 and led protests to pressure growers to agree to labor contracts with the UFW. The
organization he headed worked for both civil rights as well as economic betterment.
