Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Worksheet

Directions:

In this assignment, you identify a problem you currently face and use the concepts of logical  decision-making to generate solutions.

1. List the 4 keys for logical decision-making.

To recognize that you face an important decision

To accurately identify the alternatives

To logically evaluate the alternatives

To have the self-discipline to act on the best alternative

2. Identify a problem you need to solve.

Identify and describe below a problem you are facing that is within your control to solve. Be  sure to include enough detail so your faculty member has enough context to determine if the solutions provided later in the worksheet are appropriate. (50-100 words)

What are the four keys for logical decision-making?

A problem I am facing is that I need to find a way to make money. I haven’t worked in over 4 years. I know it will be tough for me to go through the process of obtaining a job and  keeping one long enough to put on my resume. I have mental health issues that will affect  my ability to work but I need to make money in order to support my daughter and hopefully  be able to buy her something for Christmas. Thinking that something is an alternative when it is not (thinking unrealistically). Failing to recognize an alternative (thinking too narrowly). We also discuss several other topics like All antibodies consist of how many light chains?

3. Review Ch. 10 and list two potential failures that can occur when identifying alternative  solutions.

4. What two forms of irrational problem-solving are discussed in this week’s text reading?

Problems for which our response will have obvious long-term consequences. Problems whose long-term consequences must be discovered.

5. Keeping in mind the need to avoid the potential challenges you identified in #3 and #4  above, create three possible solutions for solving the problem you are facing.

Solution #1 (25 to 50 words)

I could start looking online for jobs within 10 miles of my home. The job would have to be  part-time and no weekends or holidays.

I could just take my therapist advice and not apply for a job right now since I am not fit to  work. I could go apply for disability income due to my mental health issues.

Solution #2 (25 to 50 words)

Solution #3 (25 to 50 words)

I can go to the Department of Human Services and apply for the TEA program so I can  volunteer somewhere while they help me find a job. That way I will be able to get around  $100 a month.Don't forget about the age old question of What happen in french revolution?

6. Evaluate identified solutions.

One way to determine which solution is best is to list advantages and disadvantages of each potential solution. As you consider the advantages and disadvantages for each solution,  think carefully about the positive and negative consequences of implementing each.

Briefly describe at least two advantages and two disadvantages for each solution.

SOLUTION #1

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES

(25 to 50 words)

1. By job searching online, I can do

everything from my home and wouldn’t have  to drive around using up gas. Finding a job  within 10 miles of my home would be great  since it won’t take much gas to get there.

(25 to 50 words)

1. I haven’t worked in over 4 years so I would have to lie on my resume or take the chance  of not being hired because of lack of  experience.

(25 to 50 words)

2. I will have a stable income coming in if I  start working part-time. I can afford to buy my daughter some Christmas gifts and also get  caught up on my bills.

(25 to 50 words)

2. If I get a job then my mental health will be  even more at risk and also those I will be in  close contact with will be at risk. I am not  mentally stable enough to hold a job down.

We also discuss several other topics like What is scientific ecological knowledge?

SOLUTION #2

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES

(25 to 50 words)

1. By applying for disability, I am getting the  process starting in letting them know that I  am not mentally stable enough to hold a job  and I will have income coming in.

(25 to 50 words)

1. If I go ahead and apply for disability, it can  take months or even years for me to be  approved and awarded any money. It is a  hard and long process.

(25 to 50 words)

2. I will not have to stress about if I am able  to get a job. I wouldn’t have to worry about  getting fired due to my mental health issues.

(25 to 50 words)

2. The amount that people get in disability  usually isn’t enough to live off of alone. The  amount is so low that I will still struggle to pay my bills and live comfortably.

SOLUTION #3

ADVANTAGES

DISADVANTAGES

(25 to 50 words)

1. By applying for the TEA program, I will be  able to get a little income coming in and they  can help me build my resume up. I am also  required to volunteer somewhere until I get a  job so I will gain work experience.

(25 to 50 words)

1. They only will give me $100 a month in  assistance and they will bring my food  stamps down. That isn’t enough for me to get by on every month, especially since I have a  child.

(25 to 50 words)

2. If I apply for the TEA program then I will be eligible to receive childcare assistance while I search for a job. They also will help me with  child care vouchers so I will have help after I  get hired too.

(25 to 50 words)

2. I will be required to do volunteer work for  20 hours a week. I have social anxiety so  being around people for that long will not help me at all and I will get majorly depressed.

Explain why you ranked your solutions the way you did. Discuss why your highest ranked  solution is the best way to the solve problem and why the others are less effective solutions.  (75-100 words)

My highest ranked solution is for me to apply for disability. If my mental health is at risk and I’m not fit  to work, then that will affect me being able to hold a job or get on TEA assistance. It may take a while for me to get on disability but I think it will be worth it for me to stick to this solution to make money.  Finding a job that allows me all the requirement I need would be very hard, if not impossible.
