Water has many properties favorable to life

  • Water works as a great solution for dissolving compounds necessary for biological processes

Thermal properties of water

  • Water maintains a liquid form for a wide range of temperatures, from 00C to 1000C
  • Water has a high specific heat
  • This keeps large bodies of water from freezing
  • Density of water changes as the temperature change
  • The thin layer of ice that forms on large bodies of water keeps aquatic plants and animals safe from cold air

Density and viscosity of water

  • An animal’s ability to sink or float is based on the materials inside its body and the presence or absence of air
  • Most fist have a swim bladder that allows them to match the water’s density
  • Some kelp have bulbs that fill with gas and allow them to float to the surface
  • Small algae fill up with oil that allows them to float in water
  • Viscosity: measures a fluid’s resistance to flow
  • Marine animals have developed a shape that allows them to swim better

Dissolved inorganic molecules

  • Necessary for most compounds: hydrogen, carbon, oxygen
  • Necessary to make proteins, nucleic acids, phospholipids, and bone: nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur
  • Other major nutrients: potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron
  • The solubility of minerals
  • Water is polar: the - oxygen end is attracted the + hydrogen side of another H2O molecules
  • They can also be attracted to other polar molecules
  • Water is not a good solvent for oils and fats or any other non - polar molecules
  • When water condenses and forms clouds, when the water falls back down, it picks up nutrients from dust particles
  • Oceans have a higher concentration of minerals since evaporation removes pure water and leave the nutrients behind
  • Saturation: maximum amount of moisture a substance can take
  • Hydrogen ions
  • Reactive with other compounds
  • Acidity: concentration of hydrogen ions
  • Measured in pH
  • Low pH is acidic, high pH is basic, or alkaline

Salt balance in aquatic animals

  • Aquatic animals developed mechanisms to maintain healthy water levels
  • Solutes: substances in a solution
  • Water moves across a cell membrane from a side of low concentration to a side with high concentration
  • Semipermeable membrane: a membrane that allows only certain molecules to pass through
  • Active transport: when a membrane allows molecules to travel against the gradient
  • Osmotic potential: the force provided by a solution to attract water
  • Osmoregulation: the process in which an organism maintains water balance

  • Freshwater animals have more solutes in their bodies than their outside environment

  • Have a diluted urine that helps get rid of excess water

Adaptations in saltwater animals

  • Saltwater fish have less solutes in their bodies than their environment
  • Hyposmotic
  • Have a concentrated urine that helps get rid of excessolutes
  • Animals like sharks and rays have developed a way to balance water concentration:
  • They retain urea, which raises the osmotic potential to that of freshwater animals
  • However, urea is damaging to proteins. Therefore, these animals also retain trimethylamine oxide, which counteracts urea’s damage to proteins
