Members of the supply chain collaborate to achieve high levels of customer
satisfaction, efficiency, and competitive advantages.
From farm to fork. Everyone that touches the product to create it. OM is one of the three major functions of any organization, we need to study how people
organize themselves for productive enterprise

often very similar. DIstinctions not always clear. Very few pure service industry.
Productivity is the ratio of outputs divided by inputs. The object is to improve productivity Use multi factor, not single factor productivity\ Measurement problems Quality may change while quantity of inputs and outputs remain constant External Elements may cause an increase or decrease in productivity Precise units of measurements Productivity Variables Labor Capital Management
background image OM 300  1/19/18  Chapter Two Reasons to globalize Reduce costs Risks associated with currency exchange Reduce direct and indirect costs Trade agreement can lower tariffs Improve supply chain Understand difference between how business is handled in other
countries
Provide better goods and services Objective and subjective characteristics of good services Understand markets Interacting with foreign customers and suppliers can lead to new
opportunities
Learn to improve operations Improve products Remain open to free flow of ideas Toyota and BMW manage joint research and development Attract and retain global talent Offer better employment opportunities You can do this from ANYWHERE! Michelin is in tuscaloosa but you can
work anywhere you could think of!! Same with SMP and 3M.
Locating facilities closer to unique resources Wine in California Perfume in France Cultural and Ethical Issues Social and cultural behavioral differences International laws, agreements, codes of conduct for ethical behaviors Mobility of capital, information, goods, and people You need to understand that while you are gaining a lot from going global there is
always an impact. Make sure you completely understand it.
Mission statements tell an organization where it is going. The strategy tells the
organization how to get there.
Mission  Where are you going Organizations purpose Answers “what do we provide’ Provides boundaries and focus Gives direction not only to a business but to individuals as well Both the University of Alabama and the College of Commerce have mission statements We as consumers of this university need to know it so we can call bs if it is not
delivered
EVERYTHING should come from the mission statement. And every divisions (the
college of commerce) should feed into the main mission statement (the university)
Strategy Action plan
