background image Anatomy and Physiology II  Week 2  Dual innervation ● Antagonistic effects ( not always) ○ Sympathetic increases the pumping of the heart,  Parasympathetic decreases it ○ Sympathetic opens pupils, Parasympathetic constricts them ● Cooperative (work together) Without Dual Innervation ● Some effectors are ONLY sympathetic  ○ Adrenal medulla, sweat glands ● Sympathetic Tone ○ Constant level of communication ANS Controls- Autonomic Controls ● Hypothalamus and medulla Endocrine ● Hormones are carried by the cardiovascular system (blood)
● Bind to receptors to communicate messages
background image 2 Types of Hormones ● Amine- made from amino acids ○ Ex. Norepinephrine (neurotransmitters and hormones) ● Peptide and protein ○ Ex. Human growth hormone  ● Steroid- made from cholesterol ( hydrophobic, lipophilic) ○ Typically end in -one, testosterone Hormone Transport ● Hormones travel in H2O of blood but not steroids
● Steroids use a carrier to transport them in blood bc they are 
hydrophobic ● Hydrophobic do not face problems in cell membrane bc it is made of  lipids but hydrophilic do Mechanisms of Action ● Lipophilic hormones- steroid and thyroxine ○ Can cross through cell membrane and get inside target cell to  stimulate protein synthesis  ○ These proteins effect control inside cell ● Lipophobic hormones ○ Can’t enter target cell
○ Need receptors to communicate messages 
○ Receptors are on the outside of the cell membrane and meet 
them to get it Lipophobic linked receptors ● Channel Linked ○ Protein channels open and close to transport ions
○ Affect cells electrical properties
● Enzyme linked  ○ Lipophobic linked to enzyme can alter important chemical  reactions
