background image "If A, then B" Denoted: A --> B
Example: if you drink Pepsi, then you are happy.

A --> B

Three variations on the direct statement A-->B "If you drink Pepsi, then you are happy."

B-->A   "If you are happy, then you drink Pepsi."

~A-->~B  "If you don't drink Pepsi, then you aren't happy."

~B-->~A  "If you aren't happy, then you don't drink Pepsi
Example: (select the inverse of) If you aren't a whale then you don't live in the briny deep. -->
If you are a whale, then you live in the briny deep

Figure out what the truth table column for p --> q would look like   "If you drink Pepsi, you are happy."

The promise doesn't say
anything about
not  drinking Pepsi, so therefore
the third scenario is true
because nothing is said
about if you're happy or
not when you don't drink
Pepsi.

  The Fundamental rule:

The only situation in which A-->B
is A (antecedent) is True while B (consequent) is false

Example:

Find the truth value of..

Or: (Both have to be False
to be False)
And: (Both have to be True
to be True)
