background image Weather and Climate - GEOG 1250   Week 4    ● Hydrologic cycle (water cycle)  ○ Evaporation (liquid → vapor)
○ Precipitation
○ Condensation (vapor → liquid)
○ Transpiration (from plants)
○ Melting (ice → liquid)
○ Sublimation (ice → vapor)
○ Freezing (liquid → ice)
○ Deposition (vapor → ice)
  ● Ice  = Low temperature = Low energy  ● Liquid  = Medium temperature = High energy   ● Vapor  = High temperature = Highest energy     ● Sensible heat  = responsible for changes of temperature in water   ● Latent heat  = energy responsible for the phase change in water   ● Relative humidity  = how close the air is to saturation   ○ 70% RH = moist
○ 100% RH = saturated (maximum threshold)
○ 30% RH = dry
● Mixing ratio  = how much water is present in the atmosphere   ○ High MR = High RH  ● Saturation mixing ratio  = Max amount of water that can evaporate at a given  temperature  ○ High temp. = High SMR / low temp. = low RH  ● Dew point  = the temperature the atmosphere has to cool down to in order to become  saturated   ● Dew point depression  = the difference between the temperature and the dew point  temperature    ○ Higher the DP depression = less saturation    ● The heat index  = combination of temperature and relative humidity  ○ The way our body is affected by the combo of the two → how it “feels”  ● Frost point  = temperature the atmosphere cools down saturation → falls below freezing
Influences of temperature
:  ● Latitude  ○ Cities closer to the equator (little change in temp.)
