background image J Headrick    1/29/18 & 1/31/18  Week Four  Chapter Three  Classification and Assessment of Abnormal Behaviors  These  notes  are  a  combination  of  class  lecture,  textbook,  power  point  slides,  talking  points,  discussion notes, and assigned readings on D2L.  1.  The ICD- 11 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health  Problems) is the most commonly used diagnostic manual in the world  a.  Includes both mental and physical aliments  2.   The DSM-5 is the most commonly used manual for mental health professionals in the  United States  a.  a classification of descriptive data, not explanation   b.  Diagnostic Statistic Manual used for classifying a wide range of abnormal  behaviors based on applying specified criteria  c.  Diagnosis are used for insurance billing  d.  The DSM does not take on any theoretical perspective  i.  BUT the DSM does have a move towards the medical model by treating  the abnormal behaviors as symptoms of an underlying disorder  ii.  Some disorders do have a purely biological cause  e.  The fifth addition has significant changes from the fourth  f.  The DSM is beginning to recognize but not list Cultural Bound Syndromes  i.  Cultural Bound Syndrome: abnormal patterns of behavior found  exclusively or predominantly in a particular culture   g.  In the DSM patterns of abnormal behavior are classified into mental disorders

background image J Headrick    1.  Internal consistency- the document is the same throughout and  does not disprove its self  2.  Temporal (through time) stability- data does not change from day  to day  3.  Inter rated reliability- stat analysis  4.  Content validity- reflect the construct up front  5.  Criterion validity- the extent to which a measurement is related to  the out come  6.  Construct validity- data and information are relevant   b.  A side note on…Normal distribution curve of IQ *figure 3.2*  i.  In statistics this theoretical curve shows how often an experiment will  produce a certain result  ii.  The curve is always symmetrical, and bell shaped  iii.  Used to produce the margin of error and the degree of confidence which  are used to determine the validity of results  4.  Methods of assessment  a.  The clinical interview- the purpose is to identify data, describe current problems,  and collect psychosocial history; Can be conducted in person or on a computer  i.  Unstructured- clinician adopts their own style of questioning without a  preset  1.  Analysts would use this structure  ii.  Structured- interview follows a preset pattern exactly  1.  Behaviorist would use this structure 
background image J Headrick    iii.  Semi structured- preset pattern with some wiggle room  b.  Rorschach test AKA ink blot test – it’s believed that a person`s perceptions of the  shape of the ink blot in telling about the unconscious  c.  Thematic Apperception Test- a projective test designed to reveal a person`s social  drives or needs by having them interpret an emotionally ambiguous picture.  d.  MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) -standardized test of adult  personality and psychopathology   e.  Self-report instrument- a survey that the patient fills out on their own  i.  Becks anxiety inventory is the most common  f.  Bender Visual Gestalt Test – asks patient to recreate a geometric design  g.  Behavioral approach task – ex; snake phobia interacting with snakes in a  controlled environment  h.  EEG – electrical mapping of the brain  1/31/18  1)  Video on generalized anxiety disorder- the point of this video was to look at the diagnostic  criterion in the DSM 5   a)  Christy [GAD with panic attacks and Insomnia]  i)  Started having panic attacks in 2001  b)  Who did she go to first?  i)  “Doc in the box” - urgent care facility/small Dr. office  ii)  Not her primary care Dr.  iii) Possible counseling or therapy from friends and family   *meta-analysis study* going to someone is better than no one at all
