background image CH 1 : Innovative Management for a Changing World  Innovation: Should be part of products, peoples, processes, and values.  Management: The attainment of organizational goals through planning, organizing,  leading and controlling.   ************************************************************************  What do managers do ?  1)  Set objectives: and decides what needs to be done to achieve goals.  2)  Organize: Divides work into manageable activities and selects people to  certain jobs to maximize efficiency.  3)  Motivate and communicate: Motivate through incentives and communication.  4)  Measure: See targets and assesses individual performance.  5)  Develop people: Recognize the value of employees and develop them.  The Processes of Management:  1)  Planning: Set goals and ways of achieving them  2)  Organizing: Delegating responsibilities  3)  Leading: Using influence to motivate employees.  4)  Controlling: Monitoring activities and making corrections when necessary  Efficiency vs. Effectiveness  Effectiveness: The degree to which a task is accomplished.  Efficiency: The amount of resources used to accomplish a goal.
