background image Lecture 6 – Metamorphic Rocks  Metamorphic Rocks  Definition – rocks that formed from preexisting rocks (the protolith), and undergo mineralogical
and textural changes in response to increased heat and/or pressure.
o Protolith – can be igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic.  Recrystallization – changes in the shape and size of grains without changing the mineral
that constitutes the grains.
Phase change – transformation of a grain of one mineral into a different mineral with the
same chemical composition but a different crystal structure.
Metamorphic reaction – results in the growth of new mineral crystals that differ from
those of the protolith.
Causes of Metamorphism  Metamorphism due to heating: o Temperatures needed to metamorphose felsic (continental) rocks: 200 – 850 C o Temperatures needed to metamorphose mafic (oceanic) rocks: up to 1200 o C Metamorphism due to increased pressure: o At least 2 kbar (i.e. burial to depths of at least 6 km Increasing both pressure and temperature:  Foliated rocks = regional metamorphism  Differential stress (compression):  o Results in mineral alignment  Types of Metamorphic Rocks  Foliated (layered) metamorphic rocks:
(i.e. Slate – planar foliation; finegrained)
(i.e. Phyllite – crenulated (slightly wavy) foliation; mediumgrained)
