Theatre & Ritual  TF = theater facts (historic/terminology) 
TT/TP = theater theory/theater principle (belief/policy) 
 
Theatre:  the enactment of a drama onstage before an audience (TF)  -  All electronic or media events have their roots in live theatre  -  Examples: movie, radio, etc.    Actor-Audience Encounter  -  Theatre is LIVE (TF) 
-  Happens before our eyes 
-  Participation in the event 
  Transitory & Immediate (Temporal)  -  Each instant is direct & immediate vs. literature/visual arts 
-  Changes from moment to moment 
“perpetual present tense”  -  Happening NOW (TF)    The Focus of Theatre – Human Beings (& Their Concerns)    “Drama is an imitation of an action” – Aristotle (384-322 BC) (TF)  -  He [Aristotle] defined the difference between poetry & tragedy (drama) 
-  Oldest western treatise of drama theory = “Poetics” 
-  How is dance & poetry like drama?  Even if the characters are animals, they ALWAYS represent PEOPLE (TF)  Why are plays by Sophocles & Shakespeare being performed today?   PEOPLE haven’t changed (TT/TP)    The Universal Impulse towards Theater: Ceremonies & Rituals    Theatre is found in every culture throughout recorded history (TF)  Involves:  -  Costumes 
-  Performers in front of an audience  
-  These artists use different mediums 
(just like painters using paint)     Ceremony:  formed religious/social occasion  “EVENT”  led by designated authority figures (TF)
