Lecture 12
Bone Growth and Remodeling There are two types of cartilage growth: Interstitial growth * Appositional growth * Interstitial Growth: Means “growing from within” Only occurs within the cartilage, not in bone Growth in length of the epiphyseal plate* Interstitial Growth Process: The chondroblasts* help build up the cartilage matrix*, and then becomes
The chondrocytes divide themselves ■ The chondrocytes continue to build the matrix; push apart to  create space/ separate from each other→ This is what makes the
cartilage tissue grow from the inside
*Diaphysis→ grows in length; epiphyseal plate does not change (childhood) Appositional Growth: Means “growth at the edges” Occurs in cartilage AND in bone Increases diameter of the bone Cortical width* increases Medullary cavity* size also increases as a result Appositional Growth Process: Periosteal (outer) osteogenic cells* differentiate into osteoblasts The osteoblasts* build bone on outside of bone ● Endosteal osteoclasts* increase marrow cavity diameter→  increases bone diameter, cortical width, and medullary
The epiphyseal plate* growth helps with growth in width The plate itself does not grow, but the bone does as the cartilage builds Growth at the Epiphyseal Plate ● Osteoclasts begin to breakdown the calcified* cartilage→ creates room for the osteoblasts Osteoblasts build up the spongy bone Chondrocytes continue forming cartilage matrix in proliferating cartilage* area.
