background image Week 4 Notes Transition and Transformation Political System o Since the late 1980s, democratic states rise; totalitarian regimes fall.
o New political order in the world
Fukuyama:  a more harmonious world dominated by a
universalization of Western liberal democracy and free market
economy.
Huntington: a world that is split into different civilizations each
of which with its own value systems and ideology (e.g., Western,
Islamic and Hindu)
Rise of populism in western countries, rise of autocratic states,
rise of terrorism in recent years
Economic system: o There has been a move away from centrally planned and mixed  economies towards free markets The shift toward a market-based economic system involves three steps: o Deregulation
o Privatization
o The creation of a legal system to safeguard property rights
Country Focus: India’s economic transformation o What was the economic system of India during 1947-1990? What is  India’s economic system today and where is it heading? What are the
impediments to completing this transformation?
o How might widespread public ownership of business and extensive  government regulations have affected the efficiency of state and
private businesses, the formation of new business, and the economic
growth rate in India during 1947-1990?
o Given what is now occurring in the Indian economy, does India  represent an attractive target for inward investment by foreign
multinationals selling consumer products? Why?
Managerial Implications The overall attractiveness of a country depends upon the balance between
the likely benefits of doing business in that country against the likely costs
and risks
Benefits o Market size, current consumer purchasing power, market growth,  favorable institutional environment (democracy, market economy,
protection of property rights)
Cost: o Political costs: the cost of paying bribes or lobbying for favorable or fair treatment o Economic costs: in underdeveloped economies, firms may have to  provide its own infrastructure and supporting business o Legal costs:
