  Is it optional?  
o  (Basically yes, learning connected speech the icing on the cake for the L2 learner.)    Teachers should realize eventually (not sure when) they need to stop “coddling” students and  provide them with realistic input/speak naturally in the classroom    Native speakers (NS) don’t need to hear a whole word to know what it is (one of the advantages  we have)  Contractions, Bends, Reductions:    easier because you can see it in the orthography  o  I’ll, I’ve, my name’s    reductions like “gonna, wanna, kinda” are more informal but acceptable too  Linking:    /y/ and /w/ glide insertion in V+V  o  “be able” 
o  “too easy” 
o  “two ʷ itches” vs. “two witches” can be pronounced in two perceptibly different ways 
  Intervocalic consonant sharing  o  “dream on” 
o  particularly likely with props and highly frequent words 
  resyllabification in CC+V  o  “left arm” (we can tell where the split is because the “t” is not aspirated)    lengthened consonant in C+C  o  “big gap”    unreleased stops in C+C  o  “soap dish”  Assimilation:    word final alveolar assimilates to POA of following consonant  o  “green car” 
o  “red car” 
  palatalization  o  happens to final /s, z, t, d/ before /y/ (especially before you, your, etc.) 
o  “Does your mother know…?” 
  flaps  o  “get it in on time”  Deletion:    loss of /t/:   intervocalic /nt/ becomes nasalized  o  “winter” 
o  “enter”
