background image Chapter 8 Reading: Connecting and Communicating in the Modern World 1. The Value of Relationships o Relationships make us healthier because they impact our choices and provide us with social support i. Social support—help we receive from people in our social  network in the form of emotional, instrumental, 
informational, and appraisal support
1. Emotional support—care, love, trust, and empathy
2. Instrumental support—concrete help and service
3. Informational support—suggestions, information
4. Belonging support—sharing activities in a sense of 
belonging o Having friends can change your perspective on how hard a task  is i. Social network—people you know who can provide social  support when needed ii. Social capital—collective value of all the people in your  social network and the likelihood of those people providing 
social support when you need it
iii. Relational connectedness—mutually rewarding face-to-face contacts iv. Collective connectedness—feeling that you are part of a  community or group 2. Intimate Relations: When Connecting Gets Personal o Intimate connectedness—a relationship that makes you feel who  you are is affirmed o Intimate relationships—relationships with family members,  friends, and romantic partners, characterized by behavioral 
interdependence, need fulfillment, emotional attachment, and 
emotional availability
o Behavioral interdependence refers to the mutual impact that  people have on each other as their lives intertwine; a means of 
need fulfillment
i. Intimacy ii. Social integration iii. Nurturance iv. Assistance v. Affirmation  o Caring for yourself i. Accountability—accepting responsibility for personal  decisions, choice, and actions ii. Self-nurturance—developing individual potential through a  balanced and realistic appreciation of self-worth and ability o Family relationships i. Family of origin—people present in the household during a  child’s first years of life—usually parents and siblings
