INSTRUCTOR: DR. Gray Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) The U.S. is 2nd among all industrialized nations in rate of mood disorders (19.2%) ● Higher than most low­middle income nations ● Why? ○ Affluent Countries (12%) vs. Low­Mid Income (9%) Paradox of choice ● Amount of choice ○ Too little, not happy ○ Too much, not happy ■ U.S. has so many choices ■ Example: Jam samples, more satisfaction  with 5 samples and purchase, less  satisfaction with 15+ samples then purchase ● Didn’t feel that they found “optimal” ○ Regret ○ “What could’ve been” ● Hedonic Treadmill ○ ­seeking out things that bring  us pleasure, acclimate to it,  wonder if there’s something 
else out there
■ Over Reliance on social media ­ grass is greener?
background image ● Shown to be associated with greater symptoms ● Comparing to people posting their  “bests/excitements/highlights” ○ “Other people have super great fantastic exciting  life and mine is boring” ● 13 million Americans in past 12 months; 29.9% lifetime MDE (Major  Depressive Episode) ○ Nearly   will have episode in life ○ Lifetime prevalence is dependent on individual’s perception ● Grief Exception ­ no more ○ If spouse dies/major trauma, some people don’t want to treat episode  as it is “just greif” ■ Not a disorder ■ Want to allow appropriate emotional response ■ “How long is too long?” ○ People will have episode from ■ Breakup, fired, etc. ○ Does it affect Function of Life? ○ DSM­5 classifies MDE ■ Depressed Mood or Loss of Interest or Pleasure (Meet 1 of  these) ● (Then Meet 5 of following) ● Depressed most of day (2+ weeks) ● Diminished interest or pleasure in all or most activities ● Significant unintentional weight loss/gain ● Insomnia or sleeping too much ● Agitation or psychomotor retardation noticed by others ● Fatigue or loss of energy ● Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt ● Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or  indecisiveness ● Recurrent thoughts of death ■ MDD diagnosis requires >2 MDE Causes of MDD
background image ● Intense or Chronic Stress (life events; cortisol/anxiety) ○ Higher stress in workplace, higher cortisol, higher anxiety, increased  chance of MDD ● Developmental periods ○ Adolescence spike in MDD and MDEs ■ Bullying ■ Romantic relationships ○ Middle Age ■ Increases in suicideality, MDD ■ Dissatisfied in pieces in life ○ Later in Life ■ Loss of physical ability ■ Loss of friends ● Cognitive Variables Cognitive Triad ■ Negative thoughts towards ● Themselves ● Others ● World Pessimistic Attributional Style ■ Depressed individuals take these negatively almost always  towards themselves ■ Try to find reason/cause for why something happened ○ Internal­­External ■ Caused by you vs. caused by something else ○ Global­­­Specific ■ Effects everything in life vs. just you ○ Stable­­­­Unstable ■ Won’t change vs. Won’t be the same next  week ● Examples ● 1) Test Failure ○ “Im Stupid” Internal, Specific, Stable ● Combo for MDD ○ “Professor is bad”
