background image The Cursed House of Atreus Tantalus was the son of Zeus and a nymph named Pluto, he
is the founder of the house, but is not Greek but Phrygian or
Lydian
He could dine with the gods and Zeus told him his secrets,
but he revealed these secrets to the mortals, tried to steal
nectar and ambrosia from the feast, and feeds the gods his
infant son
As punishment he is forced to starve and be forever thirsty in
the underworld, hence the term tantalized
Hubris: Important term and concept used in the stories of
Greek heroes
The founding of this house is filled with human taboos His son Pelops is brought back by the gods, but Demeter ate
his shoulder, so they replace it with one made of ivory
He grows up to be a handsome apprentice of Poseidon
trained in chariot racing until Zeus exiles him from Olympus
His wife is Hippodamia, the daughter of king Oenomaus of
Pisa, and granddaughter of Atlas
An oracle tells Oenomaus he will be killed by his son-in-law,
so he challenges his daughter’s suitors to a chariot race and
kills them every time they lose
Pelops defeats him in a race because he tricked Oenomaus’
driver, Myrtilus, replace the spokes of the wheels with wax,
which melts, crashes the chariot and kills him
Pelops does not reward Myrtilus but throws him off a cliff
who then curses him
Pelops marries Hippodamia, becomes king of Pisa, founder of
the Olympic games and fathers Atreus and Thyestes
He has a bastard by a nymph named Chrysippus, who is
kidnapped by his tutor Laius for his beauty and killed by his
half-brothers for his beauty and they are exiled to Mycenae
Atreus becomes king of Mycenae because he has a golden
lamb, but he does not sacrifice it to Artemis like he is meant
to, his wife Aerope is the lover of Thyestes and they trick him
into giving them the lamb
