ID – identification aka how to tell poems apart 
1. Sappho a. ID: Greek, only fragments  i. men are all about war and glory  b. Poems: i. 16 – Troy 1. Different than other stories of Troy. Helen leaves by  her own free will (feminine perspective). It doesn’t 
make the Greek look good
ii. 94 – Depressing story about break-up 1. Easy to read this in a masculine perspective
2. Shows reader to focus on the good parts of 
relationship 3. Platonic, something is tearing them apart  c. Only have scraps of her poetry (on papyrus)
d. There has been a lot of second hand commentary over the years 
i. Overall analysis – great female author e. From Lesbos 2. Egyptian Poems a. ID: creepy. “Immediate aftermath of a one-night stand.” Two  speakers (boy and girl), geographic location, animals  b. Literary techniques: author is the hunter, prey is the bird. Answer and reply c. Egypt: broad meaning of brother and sister  3. Catullus a. ID: Roman. Angry/rage and lots of angst. Uses “fun words,” talks  about emotional issues (intensified) b. Poem: i. 16 – Emasculated 1. Sexual prowess > emotional control = man
2. He is being made fun of in this poem – shows that 
you need to be nice to people who make art 3. *translation matters a. “if you’re gonna insult someone, don’t half-ass  it” 4. David William a. ID: Welsh. Poems are nicer and not as creepy, also longer
