Week 11: 4/16 – 4/19 Coping with Stress: ­ Coping Methods Avoidant coping Problem­focused coping (men more likely) Emotion­focused coping (women more likely) o Our perception of control affects our health  Learned helplessness  Ex. dog getting shocked  Uncontrollable bad events  perceived lack of control  generalized helpless behavior  ­ Internal vs. External locus of control o Internal – you have control of actions (problem­focused) o External – some/many factors control of actions (emotion­factored) Health and Happiness’  ­ What is health? o How can we measure health? Mortality = death rate  Morbidity = disease rate  Disability = difficulty performing ADL’s (activities of daily life) Vitality (HEALTH!) = how physically, emotionally cognitively you feel  ­ Influences on Health Biopsychosocial  o Biological influences Genetics  Infections  Physical trauma  Nutrition  o Psychological influences  Personality  Optimism, conscientiousness  Self­control – behavioral inhibitions Increasing longevity  Can be trained to an extent  Self­esteem – good healthy To high = bad Affect/attitude: positive – good health  o Social influences  SES: economic states (how much you make)

Culture – Detroit vs. Fort Collins (crime rate, pollution, etc) Religion – who are highly active in their religion = better health  ­ Promoting Health and Happiness o Exercise  o Sleep o Being social o Act happy o Take control o Be grateful  ­ Social Psychology  Study of how others and/or environment influences individual behavior  o Social thinking: the why behind behavior Attribution theory: we explain someone’s behavior by crediting either The situation or the persons disposition  Fundamental attribution error: judging others More likely to blame others behavior to internal rather than 
external 
Why? – actor/observer effect  o You fell; I was pushed o Self­ serving bias: tendency to want to attribute positive  outcomes to look to internal cause and negative food 
outcomes to external causes 
Attitudes and Actions: o Foot­in­the­door phenomenon: small request first… then big request next  o Door­in­the­face phenomenon: big request first… then small request  o Role playing affects attitudes: Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Study  o Cognitive Dissonance Theory: discomfort felt when our attitude and behavior  don’t match We change one of those (behavior or attitude) ­ Social Influence: changing others behavior o Conformity: change in attitude or behavior as a result of social pressure Pressure to behave in ways consistent with social norms  Rules indidcating how we should and shouldn’t behave  o Injunctive norms vs. descriptive norms  Injuctive – indicate what you should be doing (ex. 
speed limit is 75 everyone going 75mph)
Descriptive – what is actually happening/ other are 
doing (ex. in reality everyone goes about 85 in a 75)
