o Moving from agriculture society to urbanization and
differentiation of labor o The age of machines: mass production  “Modern” organizations (19 th  century)  o Need good management 
o Complex structure requires good communication
 Classical approach theories proposed in late 19 th  and early 20 th   century  o Borrowed from sociology and management  Theories were developed in attempt to understand new phenomena  GOAL: to inform how to best manage so that the organizational interest
can be maximized
