Concepts: social climate in which Charles Perrault wrote and published his
"Cinderella”
o understand Perrault's "Cinderella" within the then contemporary  climate able to identity main themes in the stories/able to contrast Perrault's to
the Grimm brothers' tale
o know the importance of the tales' similarities and differences for  understanding the time periods they were written  Understand heroinism  [refer to handouts for numbered notes regarding certain questions] Romantic nationalism- emotionally connected to the culture French Society late 1600s Perrault: (modern) 1628 – 1703 o From prominent bourgeois family

background image Week 3 9/4-9/6 gentlemen- high class, polite: society/convention(behavior) – social
expectations
[Discuss Charles Perrault “Cinderella”] changes slipper to glass (Zipes thinks this was done out of irony) “Once upon a time…” universal (not a specific year or place) daughters reflect the parent Cinderella’s father “under the control of his wife” o Anomaly (man at fault) 1600s=patriarchy
o According to the book of genesis men are in charge of the
household “quality” = people of socioeconomic means stepsisters very focused on how they look  o notion of beauty: Sein vs Schein  sein – to be (being) Schein – appearance Society (peers) places emphasis on appearance Cinderella is kind no matter what Cinders – humiliation (forced to work below her station) o Cindertail (given by her stepsisters) Godmother – during baptism, godmothers are chosen by the parents  Holy act made in god’s presence  o Magical elements (has a wand)
o Helping Cinderella become her own woman
Morals: be kind and humble; appearances aren’t what they seem/aren’t
everything
Do the morals apply to men? o Looks can be deceiving [Discuss Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm “Cinderella”] focus on nature – romanticism “be good and pious” “ o pious” = religiously charged  “maiden” – virgin/innocent stepsisters: o “beautiful and fair features but nasty and wicked hearts”
o define Cinderella by how much she works
Cinderella: o Referred to as deformed
