background image Social Cognition What is social cognition? “The way we  interpret, analyze, remember, and use  information about the social world.” Two Modes: Automatic Processing NonConscious  – you’re not aware that you’re processing things Unintentional  – Things just begin to pop into your head, not because you  want to think about something, such as random 3 a.m. thoughts Post conscious automaticity  – You’re acting a certain way because of  something that has happened, and realize you’re doing so but may not
realize the full effect
Controlled processing  – higher order thinking, prefrontal cortex (e.g., count the # of people in the room) Conscious  – you’re aware that you are thinking and making decisions Intentional  – you are deciding to think about something ex. Deciding to  think about the Seahawks Voluntary  – You’re choosing to think The two work in parallel Automatic – background, first Controlled – Foreground You direct it Serial Two systems influence each other Controlled can influence automatic Automatic can influence controlled E.g. Stroop Test (figure 1) Heuristics and Biases Humans want to believe that our thinking is  Rational But..... Sometimes it’s note Figure 1
background image Common cognitive errors arise from using  Heuristics and biases Availability Heuristic Activity Pick a number from 110. Any number. Multiply it by 2. Add 8 to that number. Divide it by 2. Subtract. Current number – Original Number Take your time to do it right. Match that number to an alphabet letter. For example, 1A, 2B, 3C and so on… Got the letter? 7. Think of an European country that starts from that letter 8. Take second letter from that country and think of an animal What did you pick? Do you have an Elephant from Denmark? People rely on immediate examples that come to mind “If something can be recalled, then it must be important (or prevalent)!” o Summer of the shark for example, the availability of shark attacks allowed news  outlets to create a scare o Humans rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered (the anchor)  when making decisions. Ex:  Scenario 1 – you walk into a store and see a pair of shoes for $400 dollars,
but decide that is expensive
Scenario 2 – you walk into a store and see the same pair of shoes for $800
but the manager tells you he could give you a discount to $400
In which situation are you more likely to purchase them? Anchoring is really, really,  HARD TO RESIST But what if the anchors are absurd? But what if we’re told that there’s an anchor AND that anchor will influence us. 2
