background image Philosophy of Art – W7 10/11 *No Class on 10/9 Due to Fall Break* Philosophy teaches general thinking  We can tell how we’re feeling by how it makes us behave o Associate feeling with the behavior Recap Bell’s Theory:  Look at form to get an aesthetic emotion o Form over context Starting point for all systems of aesthetics must be the personal
experience of a peculiar emotion
o The only way to define art is something that gives this special  emotion (aesthetic emotion) Only thing Bell says can cause aesthetic emotion: significant form Significant form: shapes, lines, colors, design quality Must be able to tell if it’s a significant form Bell says aesthetic emotion = special emotion/not an everyday
emotion
o We must be able to identify aesthetic emotion without  referencing form Bell uses circular reasoning in his argument making it invalid o He could be right but it’s not useful to our understanding Can we define aesthetic emotion without defining form?  To decide we must return to the origins of “beauty of art” o Beauty = pleasure
o Aesthetic = beauty
o Aesthetic emotion = special kind of pleasure
Bell believes content distracts from aesthetic emotion and pure form Does intellectualizing art disrupt the aesthetic emotion? Value of art = connection between art and people
