Summary/meanings: 
*beginning of story introduces the “red riding hood” tale to engage the 
fairytale tradition
“one beast and only one howls in the woods by night” “beast” – 1 st  associated with wolf, later understood as  man/the man man is a wolf to man (intrinsically animalistic) “carnivore incarnate” – meat eating embodied “but those eyes are all you...” brings reader into the story “wolf may be more than he seems” aka beware o schein vs. sein “the malign door of the solstice still swings upon it hinges.” o Is speaking of change (solstice = winter solstice)
o New beginning
o Liminal moment – boundary between 2 experiences
“sealed vessel” – reference to psalm of Solomon o speaks of dangerous naïveté 
o virginity = concept considered only when in the company of 
other people (not significant in isolation) hunter is inherently good but turns out to be the wolf  mention of genitals: o dominance (masculinity)
o sexual temptations
o shock factor (male frontal nudity isn’t as common)
poppies symbolize death no fear – opposite of typical damsel in distress  “prothalamion” marriage hymn/song liebestod” – loves death o relationship leading towards death
