background image WEEK 3  Lecture  October 18th 2018   - pepe le moko is a poetic realist movie   - Orientalist before Said   - a scholarly discipline: as scholarship: a western european academic discipline devoted the 
study of history, languages, and cultures of the east. scholars working in this vein were 
called orientalists. knowledge about the orients was produced by the west.  
- a genre of cultural production (Art, literature): works of art or literature that represent a 
certain vision of the “orient”. examples: 19th century writers (Hugo, Byron, Goethe, 
Flaubert) and artists (Delacroix, Gericault, Hunt).  
- in both cases  - East or orient: a very broad category that could include North Africa, the Middle East, 
India, Turkey, parts of the Slavic world and the far East)  
- Emerges in the late 18th century; heyday in the 19th century   - Particular interest in Islam, the Muslim world  Orientalist after Said  - said posits that the orientalist tend to present the orient as accessible to the occident mind; 
they rendered its mysteries plain  
- Orientalist discourse is grounded in the notion that the orient cannot represent itself, but rather 
relies on the West to represent it 
- orientalist discourse always, maintain a distinction   - “east is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet” (Rudyard Kipling) re  - Pepe has authentic empirical knowledge of the casbah   - pepe and his adopted neighborhood :   - casbah and pepe are intertwined   - casbah has become a prison to   Section  October 19th 2018   - mocking of the tourists that come in   - pepe has a lot of power over the casbah   - White male privilege   - pepe is a white french man   - pepe is wanted by these colonized police figures  - the police has power over all but is powerless in the casbah   - as well as Algerian women dont have power over the casbah   - pepe colonizes the casbah in his own personal way   - it seems like their lives depend on him
