background image 11/15/2018 ENT2802 Notes : Ethics in Business Values Nature vs Nurture debate: we either gain them through an innate sense of right and wrong or through
emotional investments made over time
Cognitive dissonance occurs when you violate your own and when your beliefs and actions contradict
each other
Often vary from person to person / internal Morals  Socially constructed / external More universal, with more widespread acceptance Generally more similar from person to person than values Influence our actions Provide boundaries for behavior Sociopath: antisocial personality disorder, patterns of disregard for and violation of the rights of others Honesty In Business 1 in 7 large companies commit fraud every year Whistleblowers: people who risk their careers or lives to report company fraud or illegalities  People are motivated by intrinsic or protected values, where people are willing to pay a price to uphold
that value
If you get your desired result by aligning with your values, you will feel better than if you obtained it by
abandoning your values
For every dollar you earn by lying, people only feel it’s worth around 75 cents (just due to intrinsic
motivation and the feelings associated with lying)
End Note: It pays off to put people first (Alexander Wagner 2016 TEDxZurich) Business Ethics Ethics= moral principles governing behavior Find people to work with who share your protected values Adam Smith: motivation serves as an incentive, thinking about consequences influences actions
heavily ; rewards and punishments
Immanuel Kant: motivation is a fundamental notion of right and wrong driven by convictions Ethos: the characteristic spirit of an era Values/morals: implicit and privately held Ethics: publicly discussed and debated, sense of right and wrong, based on moral reasoning and bound
by context
Ethical violations are considered unprofessional at a minimum Appropriateness of an action is often dependant upon the intent Ethical Perspectives Machiavelli: believes in any means necessary to obtain and hold onto power The End Justifies the Means: the result is what matters, not the method to obtaining it Deception: misrepresentation or omission of truth Deontological ethics: not based on consequences, based on sense of right and wrong in particular
situations
Teleological ethics: based on the outcomes and consequences
