background image Week 14 Notes – JOUR 201 Nonprofit PR & Fundraising Key Features of Nonprofits 1. Voluntary, non-coercive a. they rely heavily on donors and volunteers who are giving  out of the kindness of their hearts – not because they have
to by law or because they need a certain product
2. No profits to distribute to stakeholders a. able to register as a nonprofit organization with the U.S.  government 3. Operate without simple, clear lines of ownership and  accountability a. they all operate a little differently, and there are lots of  stakeholders helping to make things happen Nonprofit Stakeholders - constituents/members served o example, for a homeless shelter, the homeless population is an important stakeholder group, while for a nonprofit art
museum, museum members would be considered an
important stakeholder group
- donors - volunteers
- board members
o people who serve on a governing board for a nonprofit
o roles vary by organization, but they are typically influential
people in the community who are volunteering their time,
and typically some funding too, to the organization
o help make decisions and oversee how the organizations  move forward in many cases, too - government - corporations
- employees
- media Similarities of Nonprofit PR - donations = revenue
background image - services = products o whether that is shelter or art or medical research and so on  – are similar to the products a corporation provides - communication, trust, reputation are vital, even more so than for  corporations Nonprofit PR Success - increasing visibility/awareness
- positive perceptions/attitudes
- meeting fundraising goals ($$)
- relationship building is key
Challenges of Nonprofit PR - increased # of nonprofits - dependent on government funding and economic circumstances
- highly competitive; multiple causes/markets
Giving Over Time - giving has increased since the 1970s. Recent generations and  your generation are thought to be some of the most generous of
all, so it will likely continue to increase, which is great news for
nonprofits.
Nonprofits Over Time - the number of nonprofits has increased over time. Beginning in  the 1990s, when a lot of government organizations stopped
providing certain services, nonprofits began popping up to
provide some of these services, which were still needed. The
number of nonprofits has only continued to grow since then,
though it does seem to be leveling out in recent years.
U.S. Giving by Source
- even though billions of dollars are brought in each year, very little of
that comes from corporations, even though corporate sponsorships are
very important to nonprofits. The majority of contributions – by far –
comes from individuals, which again, is why relationship building is so
important.
