background image Amiri Bakara/Leroi Jones (1964) - Civil right activist  Social and Political Contexts  - Civil rights and black power movements  - Climate of violence: assassinations of civil rights leaders, Vietnam war is on
tv,
Dramatic Context - Black arts: Langston Hughes – create black art forms for black people. Not
adjusting it for white audience. Elevate black art. Blackness exists in and of
itself; not in relation to whiteness. Black ppl only accepted as “half-white
trustees”.
- Political Theatre: Bertolt Brecht - Theatre of Cruelty: Antonin Artaud  Harlem is a poem by Langston Hughes (1951): What happens to dreams deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore –  And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over –  Like a syrupy sweet?  Maybe it just sags  Like a heavy load Or does it explode? This poem is the essence of Dutchman. The final line (explode) is a reference to the
assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK, Malcom X.
Dutchman has a “circular structure” i.e. the play ends right where it started off: the
same white woman approaches a new black man.
