background image Chapter 15 Psychological disorders ● What is normal behavior? ○ American definition= “conforming, adhering, or constituting a usual typical  standard.” ● Abnormal behavior ○ Syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in cognition,  emotion or behavior ● Psychological Disorder: Ongoing patterns of thoughts feelings, and actions that are  abnormal  ● Comorbidity: 2 psychological disorders at the same time  ● Harmful Dysfunctions ○ Maladaptive behavior ■ Can make it difficult to function/adapt to environment ○ Impairment in psychological functioning: can’t control thoughts ● Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders  ○ Used to diagnose disorders ○ Also used for research ● International Classification of Diseases ○ Used for clinical purposes ○ Examine the general health of populations ○ Monitor prevalence of diseases ● Anxiety Disorders ○ Generalized: anxious across every situation ○ Panic: episodes of intense dread where people experience terror with frightening  sensations ○ Phobias: irrational fear of a specific object ○ Obsessive­ Compulsive: repetitive thoughts/actions ● Somatoform Disorders ○ Conversion: experience a general symptom with no psych. Cause ○ Hypochondriasis: interpret regular symptoms as a disorder.  ● Dissociative Disorders ○ Dissociative Identity: have 2 or more distinct personalities ● Mood Disorders ○ Major Depressive: 2 or more weeks of depressed moods ○ Mania: marked by wildly optimistic state ○ Bipolar Disorder: alternates between depression and mania ● Schizophrenia ○ Disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perceptions, hallucinations ● Personality Disorders ○ Narcissistic: exaggerated feelings of self­importance, lack empathy ○ Antisocial: conduct disorder, lack empathy  ● Childhood Disorders ○ Autism: appears in childhood; deficient communication, social interaction ○ ADHD: by age 7, extreme inattention
background image ● Eating Disorders ○ Anorexia Nervosa: diets and loses weight, but still feels fat ○ Bulimia Nervosa: overeating, followed by vomiting ● Supernatural Perspective ○ View that those afflicted were thought to be practitioners of black  magic/possessed ● Biological Perspective ○ View psych. Disorders as linked to biological phenomena ■ Ex: genetic factors, brain abnormalities ○ Currently thriving! ● Psychosocial Perspective ○ Emphasizes learning, stress, and environmental factors ● Diathesis­stress model ○ Integrates biological and psychosocial factors to predict disorder ○ Suggests: people with predisposition( trauma, childhood mistreatment), are more  likely to develop a disorder  ○ KEY: Diathesis and Stress are  needed to develop a disorder  Chapter 16 Treatment of Psychological Disorders  ● Psychodynamic Therapy ○ Bring up past conflicts from unconscious to conscious ○ Have patient deal with it more effectively  ● Behavioral ○ Both abnormal/normal behavior = learned ○ Classical conditioning ■ Pair different things that weren’t paired before ○ Aversive conditioning ○ Systematic desentization ■ Exposure ● Operant Conditioning ○ Token system­ rewards and punishments ○ Observational learning  ● Humanistic  ○ People control their behavior ■ Encourage people to take control and solve their problems  ● Cognitive Behavioral Therapy  ○ Restructure the way you think about something  ● Group therapy ○ Unrelated group discuss common difficulty ● Family Therapy ○ Family members with problems  ● Self­help ○ People with similar problems get together to share feelings/experiences ■ Ex: Alcoholics Anonymous  Chapter 13­ Industrial Organizational Psychology
