Lewis Dot Structures:  consist of element symbol (nucleus+inner electrons), surrounding dots  (valence electrons, outermost shells; different elements can have the same number of dots.     Steps for writing Lewis Structures for molecules with single bonds:     1. Place atoms relative to each other, with the atom from the lower group (column) in the  center. Often, central atom is the one with the lower electronegative number.   2. Elements with the same group number means atoms with higher period (row) number is  in the center.   3. Determine the total number of valence e- available (NF3: N (5  e-) and F (7 e-)  - (7 e-  * 3 ) + 5 e- = 26 e-                 4. Draw a single bond from each surrounding atom to the central atom and subtract two  2 valence e-’s for each bond to find the # of e-’s for each bond to find number of e- remaining.   - 3 single bonds * 2 = 6 e- , so 26-6 =  20 e- remaining     5. Distribute remaining e- in pairs so that each atom has 8 e- (except H, 2 e-); place lone e-  pairs on surrounding (more EN) atoms to give full valence, and remaining e- goes on central  atom.   6. Check to see that each atom has a full valence shell     NF3 with and without lone pairs
