background image CLP 3305- Week 1 Notes  •  What is Clinical Psychology?  According to the American Psychological Association ( APA )…  ▪  “The field of Clinical Psychology integrates science, theory 
and practice to understand, predict, and alleviate 
maladjustment, disability, and discomfort as well as to 
promote human adaptation, adjustment and personal 
development. Clinical psychology focuses on the 
intellectual, emotional, biological, psychological, social and 
behavioral aspects of human functioning across the 
lifespan, in varying cultures and at all socioeconomic 
levels.” 
In simpler terms…  ▪  The field of clinical psychology uses science and practice to 
understand, prevent AND treat mental health problems. 
Clinical Psychology focuses on all areas of functioning and 
considers factors of diversity. 
•  What do Clinical Psychologists do?  Therapy/Intervention:  ▪  Clinical Psychologists spend  most  of their time in  therapy/intervention.  ▪  There are different types of specialties a Clinical 
Psychologist may follow: 
•  Cognitive, psychodynamic, behavioral, and eclectic  are the most common types  ▪  Clinical Psychologists can deal with a variety of things, such 
as:

•  Anxiety 
•  Substance Use 
•  Eating Disorders 
•  Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders 
•  Personality Disorders 
Diagnosis/Assessment:  ▪  Involves gathering info to  answer a question  or to  potentially  solve a problem   •  This can be done through:  Observation  Testing  Interviewing  Research:  ▪  To be an effective clinical psychologist, one must have 
expertise in “thinking like a scientist” 
▪  A clinical psychologist may be:  •  Researching  causes of mental disorder  •  Evaluating  different therapy techniques  Administrative Duties:  ▪  Even clinical psychologists more focused on clinical work 
such as therapy have administrative duties. 
▪  Examples:  •  Client Progress Notes 
•  Institutional Review Board (IRB) Applications 
background image The IRB reviews methods proposed for 
research to ensure they are ethical. 
•  Working on committees  Teaching:  ▪  Clinical Psychologists may teach:  •  Undergraduate courses such as:  General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, 
Personality, etc. 
•  Graduate Courses:  Psychopathology, Assessment, Intervention, 
etc. 
▪  Clinical psychologists also may  mentor  or  supervise  graduate students.  Consultation:  ▪  Sharing expertise with another agency to aid in its 
functioning. 
▪  May have an issue with a client relating to a different 
specialty in psychology so a clinical psychologist may 
consult with another psychologist in that specialty. 
Clinical Supervision:  ▪  Overseeing  clinical work of graduate students, interns or  post-docs  •  Where do Clinical Psychologist work?  Work in a variety of locations  Mostly private practice and universities in psychology 
departments 
•  Clinical Psychology Training Programs  Scientist Practitioner Model
