background image Thursday January 17, 2019 Whitman and Emily Dickinson are the greatest poets from American history
exactly alike and different
Emily Dickson o Emily is small and Walt is big
o Emily was born in 1830
o Beautiful classic New England house
o Highly educated
o Amherst Academy
o In college during the second awakening
o Years of writing the poem were years of civil war (her poetry reflects
the sounds of the war) Walt was about 40 at the time of the war o Born 30 years after G. Washington became president
o He cared for the brother injured during the war
o Left school at 11- sixth grade
o One of his jobs allowed him access to a subscription library
o He is self-taught
o His work expresses the ‘eternal me’
Good comparison because Walt is seen as the privileged one due to gender
and the bigness of his works while Emily was woman and more dedicated to
small pieces
o There is a style difference in their writing Emily has short poems with short, cryptic lines Walt has very long poetry Strong breaks- dashes as well as line breaks Walt’s works seems to continue forever using dots to
make it seem as if his work is still in process
Each depends of themselves and that leads them to danger Dickinson pries open her lines as if to make the reader take more time upon
each line of reading
o Is Whitman like a frog croaking his name? Wrote reviews regarding his work which he included in his works Very likely to publish everything while Emily was quieter and
kept her pieces to herself
“She Rose to His Requirement- dropt
The Playthings of her Life
To take the honorable Work
Of Woman, and of Wife”
o Contradictions: Play and Work, Rose and dropt
o Connections: Work, Woman, Wife biblical dictations
o Alliteration and repetition “of”
o Emphasizes all that is normally not capitalized
o The way she writes makes it clear that this is ink on paper
o Repetition  dull, routine kind of life
“If ought she missed in Her new Day,
