background image Lecture 2 and Chapter 2: Music and Culture Music is difficult to define There are 5 propositions of music: o Sound o Structure o Made by humans o Intention and perception  o Western Concept Meaning in Music This is not a straight forward concept First, it is the music sounds themselves o Musical systems make sounds comprehensible Then it is the relationship to the context (extramusical)  o Shared culture values  The emotions it elicits  The National History of Music There was a study conducted in Harvard It was an experiment of recognition of four categories of songs o Categories include:  Lullaby's  Dance Healing  Love o There were 118 songs from 86 societies o There were 750 participants from 60 countries o Results:  Lullabies and dance songs were easier to recognize  Confusion with healing and love songs Problematic because....  You don’t have all of the context  No information about the artist Society Society  is defined as a group of persons regarded as forming a single community of  related individuals  There are various types of communities o Imagined o Virtual 
background image o Transnational (across borders)  o Dispora  (a group that leaves their homeland and carriers their customs)  Culture culture  focuses on the beliefs/ laws/ morals in a community  Cultures usually overlap  Culture is dynamic EX: Gamelan beleganjur in cremation ceremonies in Bali  o These were musical assembles strictly constructed of men  o Their goal was to fend off evil spirits during cremation ceremonies o In the 1990s, female groups were introduced  o This was a social phenomenon (extension of existing social institutions)  Identity Who am I? / Who are we?  Identity is defined as people’s ideas about who they are and what unites them  Identities have many components including o Gender/ Religion/ Family/ Nationality  Identities are not completely fixed Stereotypes typically oversimplify views of others  EX: The Song “Rabbit Dance”  o This song is originally seen as a Native American “ritual” song, but it really is a  love song EX: “Dance” by Eagle and Hawk  o Blended 2 styles (Native American  Vocables  and folk rock)  Vocables : a generic term used by musicologists to describe nonlinguistic  syllables  Nation and Nationalism Nation:  a large community sharing history and cultural beliefs State:  a politically organized community ruled by a government o One state and various nations (UK)  o Stateless nations (Palestinians)  Nationalism:  ideologies and practices that promote the unity and identity of a nation  Minority Group:  some aspects of the group identity are different than the majority Music, Nationalism, and Protest Nationalistic Music o Celebrates the unity and identity of a nation  National anthems (example of nationalistic music)  National folk genres
