graphyThe science that studies the relationships among:   ↓             graphein​ “to write”   from ​ Geo “Earth”    
- natural systems (ex. weather/weather patterns; hurricanes)  
 Geographers look at the effect humans have had on Earth.    
- Geographic areas ( where you live can make you a more vulnerable population)  
- Society  
- Cultural activities  
- And the interdependence of all of these 
Overy Space.   (Through space - Spatial).        ( study of home planet and all its life)  
 
Geography is an Earth Science. It is broken into to Fields: 
 
Two Primary Fields: 
 
Physical :  Study physical features of Earth  - Physical and life sciences     Human : Study of where and why human activities are where they are and why 
they are there.  
- Social and cultural sciences   
Themes of Spatial Analysis:  
 
- The term  Spatial ​ refers to the nature and character of physical space, its  measurements, and the distribution of things with it.     ● (Likes)  Location: Where a place is found   - 1. Absolute (exact location: ie: Dallas, Texas; GPS location, coordinates)   - 2. Relative (location relative to somewhere else: ie: Austin is near Cedar 
Park)  
 
● (Pizza)  Place: What it is like there   - 1. Physical (Natural environment)

Human (Land use and language)     ● (Really)  Region​ ( A group of places that have human and physical  characteristics in common).   ● (Hand)  Human-Earth Relationships ​(How humans depend, adapt and modify  their natural environment).   ● (My)  Movement​ (People and/or goods moving from one location to another).  -ex. Communication, Circulation, Migration, & Diffusion.

- What occurs, where, time (when)   - Trend  
 
  - What is the “Science” in Earth Science? 
The Sciences are a group of disciplines that have a common approach to finding 
out how aspects of the universe work. This approach is called the “Scientific 
Method.”  
 
The Scientific Method: 
Designed to be unbiased  - Observation   - Question  - Hypothesis  ​(Prediction)  How Do We Test a Hypothesis? - conduct experiments, collect further observations & 
measurements. 
 
- Experiment  - Result 
 Accept, Modify, Result  - Theory ​ : ​A scientific theory must be “falsifiable,” i.e., there must be some  experiments or possible observations that could invalidate the theory.   - No matter how good a theory is, it can not be “absolute truth”.   - When a theory is said to be “true” it means that it agrees with all known 
experimental and/or observational evidence. When a theory cannot explain new 
observations it will have to be replaced by a new theory.

Earth Systems Concepts:  
- Matter ​ is mass that assumes physical shape and occupies space.   Solids → Liquids → Gases → Plasmas   + Energy       + Energy   + Energy  (the state of matter changes as you add more  energy). (  Matter ​is the definition of ​Energy)    
(  Dark matter absorbs energy, light matter reflects energy )  
 
- Energy  ​is a capacity to change the motion of, or to do work on, matter.    
 
Conservation Laws of Mass and Energy:  
- Mass is neither destroyed nor created.   - Energy is the capacity to change the motion of, or to do work on, matter.   - Energy is neither created or destroyed  - Input - Output = Storage Change   
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
What is a System?    - A group of parts that function together.    
 
OPEN     vs.  CLOSED  Parts can be either lost from or added to 
the system. (Ex. Earth is open in regards 
to Energy. We get energy in and out from 
the Sun).  
All parts exist in precise amounts, and 
nothing can be lost or added.  (Ex. We 
get our resources from Earth and nothing 
is added or lost from outside sources).
