background image -About half of today’s children will experience the marriage dissolution of their parents at 
some point before reaching adulthood. 
-Divorced fathers tend to become less authoritarian, less strict, and more concerned 
with the quality of care and become more protective of their child.
-Divorced mothers rely on more authoritarian patterns. These parents are at a higher 
risk for stress, depression, and mental and physical health issues.
-5 factors for post-divorce adjustment:
1. The amount of conflict among family members 2. The emotional and physical availability of both parents to their children (live in 
close proximity)
3. Ability to nurture positive relationship between divorced parents and between 
parents and child
4. The amount of social and extended family support 5. Economic resources available to the single parent and child Types of parenting:
-Teen Paretning
-Grandparenting
-Step Parenting
-G randparenting, “Kinship Care,” or “Grandfamilies” is on the rise in the U.S. -in step parenting, time and patience are key elements to making this new fam.  structure thrive. -effective strategies in rebuilding a new family:
know your role (bio parent discipline, other parent support)
hold family meetings
show a unified front
create a new identity (stepfamilies aren’t a replacement family)
have thick skin
take care of yourself and your marriage
don’t give up
