Functional Assessment

process of gathering info on antecedents & consequences of behavior to understand when & why a behavior occurs

Social Positive Reinforcement

reinforcement is obtained through another person

Social Negative Reinforcement

another person terminates aversive stimuli

Autonomic Positive Reinforcement

automatically produces reinforcer

Autonomic Negative Reinforcement

automatically avoids or removes aversive stimuli

Indirect or Informant Assessments

acquire info from indirect sources, such as interviews or questionaires

Direct or ABC Observation

record antecedents, behavior, and consequences during observation

Descriptive Method

observer writes brief description of behavior & relevant events type of recording used with direct observation

Checklist Method

checklist of possible antecedents, behaviors, & consequences made after interviews & used to make clear record of behavior type of recording used w/ direct observation

Interval Recording Method

record if behavior happens within interval record antecedents & consequences type of recording used w/ direct observation

Real-Time Recording Method

record exact time behavior occurs record antecedents & consequences type of recording used w/ direct observation

Functional Analysis

manipulate antecedent & consequent variables to determine influence on behavior

Exploratory Functional Analysis

3-4 test conditions & 1 control condition used when there is no clear hypothesis

Hypothesis-Testing Functional Analysis

1 test condition & 1 control condition used to test hypothesis

Functional Intervention

extinction, differential reinforcement, & antecedent manipulations
