SPE 3380 Exam I Study Guide SPE 3380 Study Guide Exam I  Be familiar with the following terms, concepts, and devices.  There are many devices listed on this guide. You should have a general understanding of the category and a device that would fit in the category, rather than memorizing every device.  These terms, concepts, and devices may not all appear on the exam.  The exam will consist of a variety of response types including: multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Week 1 – January 13 1. Person First Language – putting the first person first (ex. Not nonverbal instead say student with complex communication needs) 2. Types of Technology (know definition and an example for each category) a. Medical – short term vs. lifetime i. Surviving acute and chronic illnesses ii. Increasing capabilities iii. Medical equipment b. technology productivity – tools that enable children and adults to work more effectively and efficiently i. computers, word processing ii. databases iii. spreadsheets iv. videoconferencing c. information technology – all technological resources that serve as resources of information i. ERIC, other databases ii. Medline iii. Internet d. instructional technology – used to teach curriculum or used to enhance or facilitate instruction of curriculum i. efficiency and effectiveness of instruction ii. maker learning faster and better iii. resources for learning e. assistive technology – used to provide access to curriculum or instructional activities 3. Definition of an AT Device – any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, SPE 3380 Exam I Study Guide modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. 4. Definition of an AT Service – Any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device - have an expert train the student with a functional eval, selecting and designing the program for them, coordinating with specialists, and training 5. Hardware b. Software Week 2 – January 20 7. AT History (know years for each period) a. Foundation Period (1830s-1900) Louis Braille created braille Humans accommodating for disabilities since caveman era b. Establishment Period (1900-1972) Post World War I Numerous AT devices for people who are blind Brown v. Board of Education c. Empowerment Period (1973-present) Federally funded organizations cannot discriminate against people with disabilities (Section 504 of Vocational rehab Act) SPE 3380 Exam I Study Guide Education for all handicapped children act Technology related assistance for individuals with disabilities (Tech Act) 8. 1975 Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EHA- became IDEA) – Added definitions of AT devices and services 9. 1988 Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (Tech Act) – provided financial assistance to states to help develop consumer responsive, cross-age, cross-disability tech related assistance (In NC, there are 11 programs) 10. Definition of IEP – Written statement of the educational program designed to meet a child’s individual needs. Required for every child who receives special education services 11. Requirement to document AT in the IEP – AT must be considered when developing the IEP (FAPE) – AT must be documented in one or more sections of the IEP – AT devices and services that are determined educationally necessary by student’s IEP team should clearly be documented in IEP – don’t name specific brands but describe features of solutions – can put AT in seven different places in IEP 12. Definition of an AT framework – a way of thinking about and planning for AT devices and services but not an AT assessment 13. Reasons for abandonment – a. User not achieving independence b. Device chosen by therapist c. Training was insufficient d. Equipment issues (durability, reliability, maintenance) i. Bulky ii. Complicated iii. Not cool iv. Negative attention Week 3 – January 27 14. SETT framework (Student Environments Tasks Tools) – (Joy Zabala) a four part model which helps us think through the whole process a. Student: What are the areas of concern? What is impossible for the student to do at this time? b. Environment: Arrangement, support, materials available, access, attitudes c.
