CH1213 { Fall 2016 Exam 2 Topics 03{01{16 Below is a list of topics that could be covered on the exam. This list is not necessarily complete and it may include things that won’t be tested. However, if you know all of these things, you should do extremely well on the exam. Recall things that we emphasized in class. Practicing your recitation worksheets, all homeworks, and using the study guides should help you as well. The exam will consist of roughly 15-18 multiple choice, 10 matching, and 4 \show your work" type problems (with multiple parts). This breakdown of Exam 2 is not set in stone and is subject to change before Friday. However, it gives you a good idea of what to expect. 1 Chapter 5 1. Naming - Ionic compounds, molecular compounds, compounds with metals, binary molecular compounds, common names, hydrocarbons, functional groups, polyatomic ions, oxoanions, and oxoacids. 2. Lattice Energy - qualitative determinations (interatomic separations and magnitude of charges) 3. Bond Strength - qualitative determinations (intermolecular forces will help here) 4. (MATH) Percent composition by mass and determining empirical/molecular formulas 2 Chapter 6 1. Drawing Lewis structures; expanded octets; resonance 2. Formal charges 3. (Non-)Polar bonds 4. Electronegativity 3 Chapter 7 1. Electron domain geometries and molecular geometries 2. Ideal bond angles vs. \real" bond angles 3. Dipoles for molecules (symmetric vs. non-symmetric) 4. Structural isomerism nomenclature 5. Intermolecular interaction - identify all types; relative strengths; etc. 6. VBT: hybridization of an atom in a molecule; counting▯ and ▯ bonds in Lewis structures 7. MO Theory: Bond order, paramagnetism vs. diamagnetism - know simple MO diagrams (and MO labels) for homonuclear diatomics Page 1 of 1
