AY 2013 Sem 2 A252 P01 PracticeQuestions ans A252 Patient Care Problem 1: Meeting the Demand Practice Questions Answer Hospital X acquired a new, expensive, larger piece of advanced technology in the surgery theater. Therefore the operation room was enlarged to accommodate the new equipment. Also the community was impressed and everyone expected the patients being operated using this equipment to get better faster than the others. Comment on this assumption based on the unique features of health care industry: (1) working with and on humans, (2) price-performance interaction, (3) end-product deliverables, (4) not a simple line of command. Hospital X belongs to health care industry which differs essentially from the manufacturing industry. Unique features of the health care industry: (1) The materials: human Large enough operating rooms are beneficial to the patient care; however do not lead automatically to a better management of the patients and a better patient flow. (2) Price-performance interaction Advanced technology improves the health care process; however it doesn’t mean automatically a higher rate of healing or a better patient management. The patient needs time to recover and one piece of advanced and expensive technology doesn’t mean that patient heals immediately or is discharged from the hospital immediately after surgery. (3) End-product deliverables: health status Since the more important outcome in health care industry is the patients’ recovery or the improvement in the patients’ medical conditions, the end product of the health care industry is subject related, therefore these deliverables are vague and they vary from patient to patient. The advanced technology only help medical professional in their work and may contribute the improved workflow (4) Not a simple line of command Professionals of various fields of expertise participate interactively to the efficient medical work flow and to the hospital management. There are disadvantages of advanced technology used in a hospital mainly related to limited resources (man power, time and finance): - training of staff is required - equipment maintenance is required - implementation is time consuming 1 Copyright 2013 @ Republic Polytechnic, Singapore AY 2013 Sem 2 A252 P01 PracticeQuestions ans - upgrading is required etc. 2 Copyright 2013 @ Republic Polytechnic, Singapore
