Cisco Systemsconstantly growing its products and services aggressive strategy of acquisitions Cisco hallmark promote multi functional teamworkaccess to companywide resources fully global corporationl moving from hierarchical command and control to collaborative leadership approach considered leader in creating global exible supply chain efficient supply chain able to lower costs as much as possible pull order manufacturing pull modelproduct not built until customer has already placed the order reduced inventory excess efficientuse technology to create information links achieving sixsigma quality and produce cost effectively in high volumes part of Cisco s culture to match market transitions organized both vertically and horizontally 1 Describe some of the risks in new product development for high technology products only have 12 months to research technologylack of time very new technology it had to be done with all offices synced all over the world timehad only a year accelerated schedule redesigning new product while keeping original launch datg features cost wanted to create in a low cost location which is China cost challenged for advanced router complexity demands location outsourced virtually all manufacturing challenges with outsourcing complex product need to work closely with contract manufactured steering away from past practice of outsourcing in US first then overseas once production matured corroboration with 5 sites are challenging and getting culture aligned was challenging 2 What were the risks using Chinese contract manufacturing from the start E putting all their trust in the company in China Foxconn who has never supplied them in that capacity or made such a complex product for Cisco company passed the test and got the contract but still they never had supplied or manufactured in that capacity or technologyonly potentially possible might fall short on quality reliability and ontime delivery tight focused supply chain would suffer more than if production resources were dispersed in the case of natural disasters 3 What metrics and research could help Cisco contain its risks identify market needs define product features met customer requirements set up optimal supply chain for cost effective manufacturing extensive prototyping and testing and debugging marketing and pricing planj close collaboration inside and outside Cisco they gave tests to check competency from China suppliers prototype and market testing before releasing new producd increase time allowance in executing a major and complex product as this one they could research product features cloud technolog telecommunication equipments mobile interface 4 What role does the assessment of competitor moves play in Cisco s decision prlocess it s the biggest factor in their decision as it is a high risk and they really need to study the I lmarket and the direction in which they re goingl satisfy each and every criteria lower cost production for Cisco gave them a stake in the company a big control of the company major market transition in technology youtube hd tv mobile video etc shorter lead times to get product to customers due to easier logistics in Asia
