Week 7 MLM Readings My Last Duchess pg 10641066 Summary of My Last Duchess Poem is based on historical events such as involving Alfonso the Duke of Ferrara 16th century The narrator of the poem is the Duke himself In the poem the Duke is talking to an emissary who comes to negotiate a marriage with a daughter of another powerful family Royal families are considered blue blood therefore many of royal descendants believed that the only way to make the bloodline pure is to marry another powerful royal and wealthy candidate That39s my last Duchess painted on the wall looking as if she were alive lines 1amp2 These lines indicate that the Duke has been recently widowed But to myself they turned since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you but 1 lines 9 10 The Duke is showing the emissary the painting of his last Duchess The poem insinuates that the Duke is controlling and that it is only he who can allow anyone to even look at the painting of his late bride Along with controlling characteristics on page 1066 readers will find that he was very jealous of anyone who received even a smile from the Duchess Words to know Muniflcence the quality or action of being lavishly generous great generosity Page 1066 This grew 1 gave commands then all smiles stopped together there she stands as if alive Due to the Duke39s jealousy and need to control he believed that in order for his wife to stop getting attention he murdered her
