of the earliest theorists of film Poet Vachel Lindsay Born in Illinois Sings poetry Known as Poetry Troubadour Wrote book on films Hardly any films at that time only silent films Photoplay amp The Seventh An Iindsay film books being theorized taken serious by critics What is a movie Answered in Examined Life movie Socrates The unexamined life is not worth living The philosophical life is the examined ife Examined Iife the life destined to live Dialogical practice is practiced with other people It is about what is worthwhile what our life is and the significance of pursuit The idea is that there is no authority over us telling us what to do Three types of philosophical events occur They are examined life dialogical and mutual accountability In mutual accountability you are accountable for what you say I hold you accountable I hold myself accountable Self amp social accountability Our own assumptions can be hidden from us When I say something I imply something The Examined life makes you come more in terms with what you actually think self possession self criticism self examination Astra amp Cornel West Question and Answers Astra wanted to invite viewers Accesibility be interesting for teens Critical response to critical formulations Critica formulations is what you think is the case and then they form a critical response Juxtapositions Interior of airports artificialinartificial environment Not critically conscious of images in the film Read film critically when we pay attention to Juxtaposition What is its meaning There is no transformation or change without death Truth as a way of life it relates to death Plato banned the Flute but not the Lyre Because the flute appeals to all of these various sides of who we are given his tripartite conception of the soul the rational and the spirited and the appetitive And the flute is appeals to all three of those where he thinks the lyre on one string it only appeals to one and therefore is permissible Philosophy itself becomes a critical outlook of wrestling with desire in the face of death wrestling with dialogue in the face of of dogmatism and wrestling with democracy in the face of structures of domination West describes this in The Examined Life Part of Art liberates Desire too conventionally handed in tears down conventional prison Art facilitates dialogue in dogmatism and democracy Friend of desire dialogue and democracy Disappointment and failure is always at the center The blues are personal catastrophe lyrically expressed Cornel West Time as lost time as gift Way in which art reveals both aspects of time What we will lose what we39ve lost and what we will be given gracefully by time What is Art pp17amp173184 I like how the author incorporates a memoir to explain the significance or lack of Art The struggle that many people face to create such art that is told to be important is one of question Should we sacrifice so much for art What justifies art They say that lovers of art rely on criticism to improve their work and used to find support But criticism becomes contradictory that eventually there becomes no art left Each person criticizes one another that makes there leave no room for the solution This makes us uncertain of what art really is and what good useful art is in which such sacrifices should be made Pg 173184 In the future art will be different in subject matter and form The subject matter would be either feelings drawing men to union or such as already unite them The form will be that it will be open to everyone It will be simple and its excellence will come from universality not perfection The author has been writing about art for 15 years and believes that art has been taking a false path along with science that that should change for science and art work together as one Science just brings truth and knowledge to perception but art helps make these perceptions into emotions I liked how he used many comparisons to bring along the message that if science is leading a false path so is art and vice versa He also mentions that science and art are revealed upon importance of what the society and the people think are important within that decade Religion is a big part of it and since it is not emphasized in today39s science with the human life it relies on existing order only Science in today39s world is said to study everything but that is impossible and only studies those things which don t take much effort but just mere curiosity There are two types of science the science that just studies what is existent and the experimental science which is the questions of simple curiosity and technical improvements The first part is bad because it doesn t allow for human life to grow It just makes people adapt to what they already know and to what is existent The second is also bad because it restricts us from gaining answers in questions of human life Instead we gain answers from questions derived from curious scientists or from the past As I continued reading I started to drift apart from the writers viewpoints I do not think that real science is the science that contributes to religion and what we ought to believe We believe what we each individually think we should believe Whether we spend our time trying to reveal human life attributes or not people will still believe their own things despite what researchers may have found It is impossible to make the world believe a certain way I also disagree that knowing for example the Milky Way or our ancient ancestors are a waste of time Knowing and discovering these aspects of life are important for us to grow and find out things of the future Yes I do agree that some time and money are wasted in the experimental science but the experimental science isn39t too bad I also agree that there has been an increasing amount of research based on ignorance to the economy and world We could be doing other things to better where we live yet keep creating more problems to our existent ones The writer believes art should either stray away from science or come in contact with science to reveal its imperfections and the true meaning of real science Art already shows us how to act and what is important in present day With Christianity as the main guide to establish brotherly union art can matter in many ways and can change the way we look at life January 10 2013 Two movies that show importance in the question of experience The Big Chill by Lawrence Kasdan amp Vanya on 42quot 39 Street directed by Louis Malle The Big Chill 1983 assignment The Nations review Waltz Unchained Quentin Tarantino is the director of Diango Unchained the movie his best work yet He only uses scare quotes and exclamation points to produce irony that he is best known for In Django Unchained he exaggerates social conflicts to the point that movie culture itself seems to be the only common body of reference to encompass them He believes that film can depict the past better by mashing up the past racism eras of the 60 s 7039s and recent past Many believe that he focuses on the thrillers and things that can crave the audience instead of the message behind what he is using Many times people like to watch things that are not a waste of time to them and if it holds some truth it brings more people to watch it like in Django Unchained Tarantino uses old classical movies to depict his highhanded developed film The character Shultz acts out naturally by playing improvised roles The actions taken place by the film demonstrate other directors works but in a more vivid and entertaining way Certain scenes are taken from other movies like the riding of the KKK where they took a scene from the Klanmen The main characters Shulze amp Django are met hand in hand with their alter ego making the story more climatic Part of Tarantino s achievements was to make nonformulaic films out of movie formulas Christoph Waltz who plays Schulze also played Inglorious Bastards There is much debate whether Tarantino wanted to present White negroism in his film by depicting Schulze as a more powerful better man than Django where Schulze personality and character changes but not that of Django only his clothes January 22 2013 Updike Approach to the arts Graham Turner Film as Social Practice Conversation of West Cornell West That s
