Ph D Degree Concept Paper Template The Graduate School Version January 2013 Northcentral University 2013 Fostering Environmental Education in US Public Schools Concept Paper Submitted to Northcentral University Graduate Faculty of the School of XXXXXXXXXXX in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by NAME Prescott Valley Arizona Month Year Table of Contents Ph D Degree 1 Concept Paper 1 Template 1 The Graduate School 1 Statement of the Problem 5 Purpose of the Study 6 Research Questions 7 Definition of Key Terms 8 Theoretical Framework 9 Brief Review of the Literature 10 Research Method 11 Operational Definition of Variables 13 Measurement 14 Summary 15 References 17 Appendix A 18 The need for sustainable practices to foster culture of sustainability and harmony With nature is one of the prime goals of the education in public schools As the society progresses there is more and more need for a sustainable alternatives to current practices but US has failed to change the wellestablished infrastructure and environment friendly practices Although there is a increase in the specialized courses on environment but general environmental education in public school has completely neglected to favor traditional subjects and also those subjects Which Will provide income or used in higher education The policy makers and the public school authority should realize that environmental problems are ultimately a human problem as the ignorance of ecological services can ultimately lead to more vulnerable human population and impact could be huge The crystal clear motivating and comprehensive environmental education framework can solve myriad of environmental problems The traditional hierarchical and top to bottom education system in public school with little or no participation of students lead to destroy of our surrounding The Laina Copley of Macalester College came on to say that environmental education which engages all members of society children parents and different stake holders of the community to identify and solve environmental problems is absolutely necessary to encourage culture of sustainability which we desperately needed The reform that need to be pursued which will be discussed in subsequent section is based on three prime ideas These ideas are 1 Teaching and learning structure 11 Curriculum III Evaluation Thus fostering environmental education in US public schools needs a education reform which will take the issue to the young and inspiring talent which will break the formal education and inculcate the school students to learn think and ask questions Statement of the Problem The need for environmental education will be multidisciplinary in approach and deals with the essence of human and nature relationship Only the awareness towards environment will help young students to take this issue to local and even global level Moreover the wrong believe that economic objective can only be full filled if environment considerations are not taken into account will perish and students will foster a sustainable interaction between ecology and human Thus there is a urgent need for the environmental education programs which will enable general study and concepts of environment by two way processes that is equal participation of students also The environmental problems include energy crisis degrading environment and incremental increase in chronic diseases due to increase in pollution deforestation and issues of economic growth vs sustainable development Thus the problem of environmental education in public schools is both a organizational problem and also a social problem If the proposed study here is not present the viewpoint of the schools towards environment education across all schools in the United States in general and public school in particular would never been the addressed with various support data and study Purpose of the Study The purpose of this concept paper is to draw attention of the policy maker and society at large to the education crisis that is going in respect to general environment education in the public school of the United States The environmental problems such as pollution and others which requires the effort of the society at large so student from any discipline should be provided environmental education Here the purpose of study is full filled by mixed method that is by both quantitative and qualitative to put the main goal of the paper into place As the environmental education is not a priority of the public schools across the country so to make the understand the importance and the need for the environmental education is must The purpose of this paper will be full filled if larger support both monetary and policy will be provided to state and central run public schools so that they can deliver the environmental education at ground A survey on environmental education and sustainability among public schools is done in 15 states Very comprehensive approach which include both quantitative in terms of teaching faculty support and equipment s and qualitative things such as general awareness and environmental conscience of the students are studied in this investigation It is basically an integrated investigation to proof the point of the real scenario of the environmental education in the country by taking students and their parents principals and teachers are part of this investigation Also variables are chosen in way that even a small sample should represent the general education status of the country Here the sample size is kept large by sending the sample to 17500 traditional and charter public school principals In this study environmental education is looked into school curriculum food program connections to informal sciences and also environmental education organization and community practices Thus the result of this study is very close to the truth and clearly outlay the present conditions and challenges Research Questions The research question here is about the Fostering Environmental Education in US Public Schools Thus the optimistic view is taken and those areas are touched in the research questions which are the goal of education at large and also set by the law such as the framework that is mentioned in the National environmental act of 1990 Thus the research question here includes a diverse area and solve the major problem of the society The qualitative question here are Q1 Highest qualification of a environmental teacher Q2 Whether school has any environmental volunteering group or not Q3 Whether any environmental practices are followed or not The quantitative question here are Q1 Budget allocation for the environmental protection Q2 Number of children enrolled in environmental task force of the school if any Hypotheses Here the hypothesis is the high budget allocation will provide better environmental education condition in the schools Also if better environmental friendly facilities are found in the schools it will inculcate the good qualities in the students as they say how better energy efficient solar panels CFLs lights will help to cut economic cost and also less to the environment H10 High budget allocation will provide better environmental education condition in the schools Definition of Key Terms The key terms in this concept paper are as follows Term 1 Sustainable development The term sustainable development means a development prospective in which development are done in a way so that both present and future consideration of resources are taken into account This terms basically came as a way in the 20th century to go hand in hand with economic and environmental consideration The first use of this term is done in Stockholm world environment summit Term 2 Integrated development Integrated development means development which does not only include one prospect but takes social economic environmental cultural and other factor into account The regional environmental planning and study are done on the concept of integrated development Term 3 Culture of Sustainability The basic aim of the environmental education is to make people sensitive about the sustainable approach towards environment With rising population and increasing fight between human and nature the sustainable methods should be adopted which will inculcate better prospect for the present and future Theoretical Framework The basic theoretical framework and basis for environmental education are Awareness and sensitivity Knowledge and understanding Attitudes Skills and participation This acts as a chain one after the other Thus to make a responsible citizen which have a respect for the environment and proper knowledge about it the environmental education should be used Environmental education involves awareness and knowledge Awareness and knowledge as a basic primary difference Knowledge is provided by the environmental education to the student while awareness comes from the practices that are followed in the school such as better energy efficient technologies and awareness programs that are run in the public school premises Both history and current condition of the environment education needs to be looked as both challenges and prospect are huge Only after the knowledge and awareness that is provided the critical thinking starts happening Critical thinking will helps society grow and will fulfill the basic aim of this concept paper There are many theories which are put forward by various scholars but the environmentalism has its genesis in the basic structure of the society Let us take the example of the Denmark only Its expends huge amount of its GDP into clean energy in general and wind energy in particular This will gives a great sustainable boom to its economy This story should be taught in the class so that student feel motivated and they also look for those practices which will enable better environmental condition in the United States of America The critical thinking can further progressed by the problem solving techniques This is where the science and arts subjects merge where better innovation practices are used to enable better and prosperous living condition for the human Humans have always used resources in a unjustified way to fulfill its wishes and greed and this has causes so much harm to us only Brief Review of the Literature Environmental education in public schools should go beyond the classroom and should be based on the principal of participation and experimentation The experimentation and awareness of major environmental problems such as climate change limited natural resources habitat destruction and environmental pollution are absolutely necessary as we can not wait for another 30 years to solve them but getting students aware of their surrounding and environment is necessary Although students are becoming more environmentally literate and concerned most adults rely on the media for their limited environmental education B allantyne Fien amp Packer 2000 The creativity and drawing attention with the new ideas will prosper the environment as will provide solution to the complex environmental problems The main point that this study touch upon are the hierarchical level of teaching in which teacher spoke and student only listen In the environment class this approach should be laid off and student should be entitled to not only engage with teachers but have also equal share in the learning process The other thing that is included in the study is learning by doing That is other than knowledge the awareness in the student will come from the daily environmental friendly activities that are practiced in the public school Also proper and deep cross cutting case studies should be provided to the student so that they can understand how actually the world react to environmental problems The scenario here is very complex and unrest in nature Environment is constantly changing and new thing should be updated Books which are older than student s age should not be adopted as it gives the problem of context rather investment and budget allocation should be made to make the classroom a practical class which are full of interactive sessions Research Method Research method involves all the steps which are adopted to understand the issue and arrive at a conclusion by statistically verifying various assumptions Here the study is done in 15 states which include Colorado Florida Hawaii Kansas Kentucky Maryland Massachusetts Missouri Oregon Virginia Washington and Wisconsin The survey is done by taking the sample which best describe the situation Its aim is to provide the better scenario for the conditions and addresses the challenge that is faced by the society The research method that is adopted here to sample is stratified sampling That is based the criteria is set on which sampling would be done than on the basis on the criteria different schools principals are contacted across all 15 states It is one of the most extensive exercises done and the sample size is taken large so that it suits best to the real scenario There has been many out break and difficulties that are faced as few principles don t even respond and absolutely do not take any effort to help us The scenario is vivid and and environmental education topic is multidisciplinary so things should need to be taken in perspective The validity of the assignment is huge Survey forms are sent to 17500 principals with 1056 principles are participating and provided all the information regarding environment such as facilities and operations curriculum food program connections to informal science and environmental education organizations and community practices A 6 response rate and margin of error is 5 while the level of confidence is 95 This clearly shows the viewpoint of the principals about environment Survey data is accurate and very much accurate to the original scenario Issues like master plan green technology and green team in the schools are asked which is a new thing The simple statistical tools such as regression correlation and anova is perform on the quantitative as mentioned above However the major focus is laid down on the qualitative analysis as education is largely an social and less scientific topic With so much in hand and people around the globe are realizing the cause and impact of the condition then problem can only be solved by taking the challenges on your shoulder Operational De nition of Variables The mixed method is followed So budgetary allocation and fixing of variables is extremely important ConstructVariable 1 Environmental programs such as Planting tree Clean energy Manure creation efficient lighting etc Thus these variable are nominal and it has a strong correlation with the budgetary allocation by the college on different environmental initiative Variable 2 The other variable is the allocation of budget in environmental education out of total budget It is one of the major factor There are few public schools which allocate large money for environment though they have less money On the other hand there are schools which are really facing the heat that is they allocate very minimal or no money for educating student about nature and environment These variable put the things into perspective and allow the comparison between them It also help to establish the positive relationship between one thing or the other Measurement The data collected is from informal sources mainly through mailing and from top authorities The proposed data analysis include piechart Also power analysis is done so that proper size of the data can be determined Data is not collected about student or teacher only it includes the parents also This is one of the major breakthrough regarding comprehensive approach So a share chart bar graph and pie graph are constructed which will better conditions The measurement of data is done through personal interviews also As highest body of a public school allow the permission so data source is absolutely true The measurement clearly shows the present conditions are the real picture on the ground Other statistical methods include ANOVA Analysis of variance and normal distribution is adopted This are really statistically grieved The method of sampling is very long and takes month to complete it People from different fields are employed to do measurement so that accurate data can be collected Measurement include all type of measure from quantitative and qualitative This methods have resolved many problems The better techniques for ananlysis and suitable analysis methods have given opportunity to make the condition better for other partners Thus environment Will be established Thus first data is collected through correct sampling Than data are put in tabular forms and mean and standard deviations are calculated These statistical tools have enabled to do the presentation of the data And finally analysis is done Measurement tools and budget data are official so they are accurate and confidential These data take care of the real picture and so if the sampling technique is good perfectly nice conclusion can be made Summary Thus fostering environment education in public school enables every section of the society to look and see the real picture in place The thing clearly shows the condition of environment education is not good in the country The people which are involved in making policy for the students waste their time in making those syllabus which ate bad Thus the condition need to be taken into account Environmental education clearly outlays that the next few years are the challenging Many schools are spending less than 5000 in nonconstruction activity When this is the scenario how can progress in education system can be done The survey also points to key challenges that must be addressed to make further progress Principals need more staffs money and other resources to create a better scenario Also better tutor team which are ultra modern and motivate students do cater the issue of major environmental changes such as pollution and climate change Thus it is absolutely right time to act both locally and globally Things are need to be put in perspective All the measurement techniques and statistical classification have shown a sign of improvement When student gets environment education they tike issue to their parents and their younger brother and sister which will motivate them to take proper efforts which will help society to progress References Reference 1 httpWWWmac a1esteredu educ
