Chapter 6 - Power function y=bx^m gives a straight line when plotted on a log-log axis - Exponential function y=be^(mx) also y=b(10)^(mx) gives a straight line when plotted on a semilog plot where the y axis is logarithmic. - Exponential functions never pass through the origin - Power function can pass through origin only if M>0 - P=polyfit(x,y,n) returns n+1 terms - Least square criterion: minimizes the sum of the squares of the residuals (sort of like a line of best fit) - Polyfit is based on the least square method - P=[3 2 1]; polyval(p,[5 7 9]) evaluates 3x^2 + 2x + 1 at x=5, 7, 9 - J/S indicates the factional variation unaccounted by the model; J/S is the residual - R^2 is the coefficient of determination = 1 – J/S - Good fit corresponds to r^2 > .99 or 99% - Lower J values corresponds to a higher r^2 value Chapter 7 - Use the “bar” function for relative frequency histograms; ex bar(x,y) - [z,x]=hist(x,y) - Z = frequency of X ; X = the input that’s being plotted - Hist(y,n) = vector y in n spaced bins - Normal distribution - Bell curve 16%, 68%, 16% - If its nu-2theta its 2%, 96%, 2% - The greater the theta value, the more spread out the graph look like - Cylindrical hole – shaft diameter = c= d1-d2 to compute mean and the variance - Rand will give a uniform distribution from 0 to 1 - Y= (theta)(x) + (nu) theta = standard deviation; nu = mean - Randn gives a number having a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1 - Rand(x) gives a matrix x by x between 0 and 1 - Rand(x,y) gives a matrix x by y between 0 and 1 - Cublic spline between each pair of points Chapter 8 - Singular- no unique solution or no solution at all - Undermined systems: fewer equations than unknowns
