Culturally Diverse Classroom 1 Creating a Plan for a Culturally Diverse Classroom University of Phoenix AED 204 January 25 2009 Culturally Diverse Classroom 2 Creating a Plan for a Culturally Diverse Classroom My classroom consists of five different ethnic and religious groups My class includes five white students three African American students two Puerto Rican students and one Asian student One of the African American students is also part of the Jehovah s Witness religion Our classroom is very diverse so it is very important that we make the classroom welcoming to each and every student regardless of their culture or religion Our class s atmosphere includes caring acceptance and tolerance because we want all students to feel at home Our classroom is very welcoming because we help all the student s to feel accepted regardless of their race ethnicity or religion I am able to do so by incorporating books about different cultures traditions and history s into our daily curriculum When we read book about other cultures or religions the class works together to relate their cultures and their religions to the one in the book I think it is very important that students find similarities from their own lifestyle with other cultures to make them more accepting of others Our class also celebrates all holiday s to help them get a better understanding of each of them For example during Christmas we decorate our class with Christmas decorations Hanukah decorations and Kwanzaa decorations This gets the attention of all the students regardless of their religion This type of assignment also works well with students who practice the Jehovah s Witness religion because it becomes a fun assignment rather than a celebration of a specific holiday Our class has lots of fun implementing acceptance into our classroom Caring is very important to making each and every student feel welcome and happy in the classroom A student needs to feel safe out of the home and my plan enables all students to feel happy and safe in the classroom I encourage growth with each child individually by monitoring their reading and math levels I also provide an array of learning activities for the class so every Culturally Diverse Classroom 3 child is able to find a fun way to learn I reward positive behavior with stickers fun activities or being able to pick the activity we do next Parents are spoken to on a regular basis to ensure their child s academic success Also communication between students and me is positive uplifting and caring I completely avoid humiliation ridicule and impatiens when communicating with my students I make the classroom s atmosphere a very caring place because I know that that is the way I would want to be treated and that is the way I would want my son s teachers to interact with him It is very important to have a caring classroom atmosphere for all students Our classroom is equipped with very strong tolerance expectations My classroom is very understanding that my classroom does not tolerate any type of bullying or harassment In today s society children are becoming bisexual and homosexual at very young ages and because of this they feel left out and shy towards their peers I like my classroom to be accepting of any type of difference in the classroom because if they are not is causes students to stray away from school I also work hard to keep each and every one of my students understanding of diverse cultures so they become accepting of them Children tend to be very mean to their peers when they realize they are different from their self That is why we learn about all types of cultures cultural traditions and significant events in history I feel that this type of diverse curriculum allows students to relate to others and become more welcoming to differences I feel that my plan of tolerance is very thorough and easily understood by my students Each one of my plans to address tolerance caring and acceptance are all very thorough and well thought out plans I feel that each one of my students feel that they are accepted in the classroom regardless of their personal differences with the class I feel that each one of my students feel that they are cared for in the class and I feel that parents are very confident that I am very caring toward their children I am also completely confident that every student in my class works very hard to accept their peer s difference in a very effective way Our class does not Culturally Diverse Classroom 4 tolerate any type of unacceptance or harassment toward their peers and I am confident that each student is very understanding of this classroom rule Our class works very hard to make each other feel comfortable and safe in the classroom I have a great class and they are very happy to make each other feel safe and accepted in the classroom One way that I help our entire class come together and become more welcoming to diverse cultures is everyone working together to help decorate our bulletin board We decorate our bulletin board for holidays activities birthdays topics we are learning about in class and special classroom celebrations We use clippings from magazines drawings newspaper articles or anything the students want to use to show their unique personality This week we are celebrating Thanksgiving So each of the students were to draw a picture that explains what they do for their Thanksgiving or how they celebrate Thanksgiving with their families In the center of our bulletin board is a picture of children around the world I feel that the picture represents diverse cultures coming together as one so it is a great picture to be in the center of our work The student s in my class picked out pictures of Indians England and Greece celebrating Thanksgiving They also drew pictures to represent what they do for Thanksgiving with their families and they clipped pictures from magazines showing what they eat at thanksgiving The bulletin board showed lots of diversity by explaining what every student does for the specific holiday This is the same type of diversity is shown on every bulletin board when decorated for holidays or classroom celebrations I think it is very important for the students to get to know each other by learning what they each for holidays or special events This activity is a lot of fun for the whole class and a very effective assignment for diversity is the classroom Culturally Diverse Classroom 5 Indians Celebrating Thanksgiving Greece Celebrating Thanksgiving
